Suggest a Tang (or other)!

Here is what I do since I love Chevron Tangs. I buy a baby and in a year I sell it/trade it to a club member usually at a lost to give him a better home when he gets to big for my tank. I have an adult in my 300 but I don't want to chance putting in another just to see if the newbie will survive?

This thought crossed my mind several time. However, I'm not sure we are in an area with enough in the hobby to ensure a new home. I'd love the idea of semi-hand rearing a juvie for new home.

OP's tank footprint is too small for most of these tangs, especially the hippo, orange shoulder and clown. You might be a bit careful because it almost sounds like you're recommending them (except the clown) even though you're probably just "waxing tang".:spin3:

She said the 150 had a 120 footprint. I thought a 120g was 6 ft long.

I thought a hippo should be OK.

My Bellus angelfish is listed as reef safe and thus far (1 week ) hasn't bothered my LPS and SPS, yet.

What about a convict tang they stay smallish and are not that mean

Going by what you have stated for size and color contrast the Kole is first to pop in my mind.
My last one was pretty cool, kinda the poor mans PT w/ less attitude.
Chevrons are at top of my list for a smallish tang, and you do have the volume, but length comes up a hair short going by sticky posted on tangs.
Most comments I've read on convicts weren't that friendly.

That last one is really pretty. What is it? Reef safe?

Also, when i search for Kole tangs I find some like the one we had and then some that are nearly purple with yellow eyes. Is that just variation or age? Is there a way to get that more purple colored version?

Subscribed to this thread. I am also looking for a new tang after my 5 year old Yellow Tang succumbed to a heater breakage.

I was looking at the Lavender Tang (Acanthurus nigrofuscus) as a new candidate, but I don't think a 100g (5 foot) tank is large enough.

Applying a filter search on Liveaquaria, some tangs are suggested for a minimum 70g tank (the smallest tank available for selection):

- Scopas (Zebrasoma scopas)
- Kole Yellow Eye (Ctenochaetus strigosus)
- Convict (Acanthurus triostegus)
- Tomini Bristletooth (Ctenochaetus tominiensis)
- Mimic (Acanthurus chronixis)
- Powder Brown (Acanthurus japonicus)
- Spotted Bristletooth (Ctenochaetus truncatus)
- Two Spot Bristletooth (Ctenochaetus binotatus)

For the little bit I've researched, only the Ctenochaetus are good candidates for a smaller tank (no Lavender Tang for me).

Not sure how accurate it is to include a Zebrasoma and some Acanthurus on that list.
