I have a 72 gallon Reef tank with a 20 gallon sump with mud, growing cheato and"culerpa"(Yes I'm sure I mispelled it).
I need a HOB skimmer for this coral reef system.
What would you suggest???
Thanks. Eric

If you have a sump why use a HOB skimmer? Insump skimmers will be better than any HOB ones hands down.

D.

Not to mention that your overflow is essentially going to be stealing the best water from the HOB skimmer.

If you need to run a HOB skimmer (because you already have one) run it in the sump.

That being said, D is right, your average $100 in sump will destroy your average $250 HOB.

Well I could put a skimmer in the sump, Its going to be tight, but can be done. I will have to move my Macro out of the was and place a flat rock so the skimmer can rest on it. Space it limited.
SO.......Any suggestions???? Oh, please some relaistic chioces, No I am not spending over 300 dollars for a skimmer in this tank.

If space is an issue try a tunze 9005 or 9010. They are like 4.5"x4" or somthing like that. Very slim and good skimmers to boot.

Well the Octopus seem to be priced right. I will look in to the measurements in my sump. So I take it that the recirc should be the way to go. Does it REALLY make that much of a diffrence???

I'm looking at the Octopus Recirc Needlewheel 110. $199.99 Its rated for a 120 gallons, so it should do wonders in my 72 bowfront.

Im a little confused, So it draws the water in from the main pump, then I have to buy an additional pump for the recirc. Which pump? I have a 72 gallon tank with about a 20 to 25 gallon sump at most.

The needlewheel pump that is supplied with the unit is the recirc pump. You will have to add the feed pump, which its recommended to add something with a GPH rating of roughly 1.5x to 2x your system size (so a 75 gallon tank you'd add something like a MJ-600).
