suggestion for Divers Den

Hello:

I have a suggestion for the DIvers Den Site. I routinely look at the aquacultured corals you offer in this area. However, it is often very difficult to extrapolate what the mother colony of one of these frags may look like. Do you think that in the enlarged view, you could offer a picture of the mother colony? This way, typical growth pattern, coloration, etc can be deduced. I know different systems will yield different features, but it woudl assist me greatly, especially when the corals have "nicknames", rather than scientific names. Also, I understand that you do acquire corals from outside farms, so perhaps they could provide you with a photo. If not, that is, of course, understandable, but for your frags generated in house, as well as outside farmer who can offer a mother photo, that would be very helpful, at least for me. Thanks.

Jeremy,
Thank you for your feedback and we always welcome suggestions to improve the shopping experience on our web sites. The vast majority of commercial and private "Coral Farms" in the US are what I commonly term "chop shops", or ones that just cut up wild harvested corals into smaller pieces and sell them off to hobbyists calling them Captive Grown Corals.

Our philosophy at Drs. Foster and Smith's Aquaculture Coral and Marine Life Facility in Rhinelander Wisconsin is a bit different. A true Captive Grown coral is one that is actually grown in captivity, where the initial fragment was taken from new growth whenever possible as multiple generational frags are hardier and more adaptable.

Coral Farms that truly grow corals in a captive environment in this manner more often than not do not have large, showy pieces of dedicated broodstock, but rather are fragmenting from larger "Frags" or colonies that are far from "show" quality.

Moving forward where applicable and when we have the ability to show grown out specimens, we will do our best to incorporate images of larger or grown out representations of the Certified Captive Grown Corals we offer on the LiveAquaria.com web site.

Cheers!

Dear Kevin:

I agree 1 million percent aboput chop shop coral "farms". That is why I specially enjoy your aquacultured section, as it is "legitimately sublime".

I also understand that many of your mother colony may, in fact, look like Frankenstein due to their crop. I was just hoping to get a glimpse as to what some of these coral may look like in a larger state, as many of them have not taken on their true morphologic form in the form they are sold in.

Regardless, thanks for the quick response, and kudos to you and your company.
