Suggestion on how to catch a tang?

Not Likely 2 Ever Grow Up
I've been trying since Friday night to catch our Hippo tang, and he doesn't seem to be falling for the food in the container trick.

This worked so well to catch the 6-line Wrasse two months ago... although, instead of using a two litre bottle, I'm using a gallon milk jug. I thought the two litre would be too small now for him to want to go into.

I've got someone one wants to buy this fish, and I really need to catch him. Any suggestions? Tricks that have worked for you in the past?

Thanks in advance.

Get some big containers and drain most of the water out of the tank. Catch the fish and pump it back in. Actually the fastest and easiest way to catch some fish. :)

Cut some egg crate to fit the width and height of your tank, take out or move half of your LR and chase the tang into the the section of the tank you just moved the LR from, close it off with the egg crate and close in on it. Good times.

Jennie,
Clear bottle is the best way. also feeding into a net for a few days as well. when I was trying to catch my angel, I my sohal tang almost got stuck in the hole he wanted teh food so bad. Dont feed anywhere but in that bottle.

Clear is best. I bought a bottle of $1 nasty soda and poured it out just to make my trap.

Like the poster above suggested. Use a 2l clear soda bottle, cut out an opening around the upper area close to where the bottle starts to get smaller to the top. I made a 2-3" triangle cut and removed the whole piece of plastic. Tie some fishing line to the screw top area and place the bottle in the tank and get it in position, place food in the bottle (i used a syringe but if you don't have one just put the bottle in first and lower slowly halfway, place the food and lower the rest. as long as the food is near the bottom of the bottle.)
Then just wait it out with the fishing line in your hand. It took my imperator angel about 15 minutes and he was in there eating away. once he gets in well enough closer to the bottom, haul it up and out.
Takes a few minutes and when I did it I got 2 fish at once but still easier than emptying your tank or trying the net the guy.

Thanks for all the suggestions... It's just so frustrating to see all the other fish swimming in and out of the jug, likes its no big deal - and the tang will swim up to the opening, then dash off. He knows! LOL

lol yeah i know what ya mean, ALL my fish had already inspected and tried the food out. The hippo was munching down in the bottle for like 5 minutes before finally the angel decided it was safe and boom, got em both lol

Jennie, if the others are going in, that is a good sign. just keep at it. you will get him. it took us a few days to get ours in there. but once the angel was going in, Melanie caught it right away.
