Suggestions for Digital Camera $300 or less

My wife is looking to replace her Canon point and shoot with a better camera. She is looking to increase her optical zoom and have the ability to adjust the flash level since her Canon doesn't have that feature. So I am looking into a SLR-like camera for around $300 or less. A bit over would be ok.

I saw on Newegg some Kodak Easyshare cameras in the price range but I am not sure on quality of those cameras. Any suggestions?

we eventually found the Olympus sp-500uz. so far looks good. just came in 2 days ago so I haven't messed with it too much.

yeah I certainly will. We got a kit that came with 3 filters, UV, polarize and another, and also the wide angle and telephoto lenses. I have nto had a chance to get some shots put I will post them up here. Incidently we got it a beach camera. it was 279 on pricegrabber.

Ok I managed to get some shots of the tank. So here is the whole deal. An by no means am I a photographer so take this as it is :)

The camera is an Olympus SP-500UZ. It is a 6 MP and has 12x optical zoom. 50x digital I believe but I never use digital zoom. This camera was purchased to replace my wife's Canon A40. My camera is an Canon A75. I do pretty well even though it is a point and shoot.

The camera and accesories were purchased at Beach Camera. The camera was $279 and the accessory package was $239 and included: 1gb XD Memory card (Olympus brand), Olympus brand XD card reader, batteries and battery charger, Digital Concepts filter kit including UV, FLD and Polarizer filters, Lens barrel adapter, Digital Optics Telephoto (2x) and Wide Angle lenses, a carrying bag, screen protectors and a lens cleaning kit. Camera and gear got here very quickly and without injurys. Very happy with service.

As I said I am not camera guy but I am a computer geek and can tell you that the software is a bit clunky. But if you format the card and use the card reader you don't need the software. My wife likes it as there are simple functions that allow you to adjust levels and even remove red eye. She likes it I prefer the manual means of Photoshop.

Ergonomicly (sp?) the camera is good for my hands, my wife is smaller and has a bit of a reach to get the zoom to roll. But nothign terrible. Layout will take some getting used to since it is different than my Canon. The macro is not bad but there is some playing that is needed. There is 2 types of macro, one that lets you zoom or another that is stationary but for objects really close to the lens. I found focusing to be a bit frustrating BUT I think after playing with it for awhile it will come natural.

So before I get the "thread is worthless without pics" gif here you go. The shots posted here have been adjusted. Minor levels then unsharp mask and resized to 640x480. The camera will shoot RAW but I have no experience with that. Fulls sized, unedited shots can be found HERE. Be advised my Jalbum templates don't seem to pull all the EXIF data from the file like my Canon. Not sure why but I will have to look into it.

Here are the shots.

It does seem like a nice camera. Hoenstly for about $300 more I could have gotten a Canon Rebel with lens I would guess. For a point and shoot though it should take good pics and without the accessories $279 is not too bad of a price.

I'd agree that for roughly $300, It's a good P+S camera. I know you would be much happier with a DSLR though. You're happy with it, so go enjoy it until you're tired of it! Which will be a long time hopefully.

I keep seeing deals on slickdeals.net for canon Rebel XT over at dell. Gets cheaper every time I see a deal lol.
