Suggestions To Moving Maxima Clam

Hi, Everyone.

I have a blue maxima clam about 4" who's happy on a small rock in my tank. Next weekend, I will be switching the Aquascape out from Pukani Rock to Tonga. The current aquascape is giving me some flow challenges. What does everyone suggest to carefully remove him? He's does not want to leave, he's putting his "foot down" LOL.

Don't want to stress him out.

You want to cut him off the rock. That's really difficult. You can use a razor blade and cut as close to the rock as possible. But there is a huge risk of cutting to much and killing the clam

If it were mine, I would just move the piece of rock too. Why take the risk of injuring the clam? If there is a problem with nuisance algae on the rock, when you remove the clam/rock, carefully pour some hydrogen peroxide on the affected parts of the rock to kill off the bad stuff, then rinse once in old tank water and you should be good to go.

I agree on all points. Why are you switching your entire rock type for a re-aquascaping? Does it need to be all Tonga?

The rock is much bigger than the clam. I can try to cut the rock down small enough in old tank water. The rock has vermetid snails on it so I want to get rid of it. Peroxide might be the best option here so thanks for that. Just to confirm, no peroxide on the clams foot right? I didn't think so, but just confirming.

Correct

Personally I wouldn't rearrange all my rock and change it just for flow. I would just add another powerhead I always think my tank doesn't have enough flow too. But out of all the things that kill our corals. I would put flow at bottom of the list

Adding another powerhead isn't an option for me due to my design. I also want to get rid of some pest snails. I don't have too little flow I have too many flow inconsistencies.

You want your flow to be varied. Corals don't like steady flow. Also taking your rock out will only slow the snail problem. You will leave a few behind and they will just cone back. You ever though about getting a wrasse or 2 A melarunus wrasses is a great fish

Yes I'm getting a wrasse. Im taking my rocks out though and replacing them. No other way around it. The scape is not working for me. I was able to cut the rock down small enough and keep the clam in tact. So thanks for the suggestions everyone on that.

As you can see from these pics I have two
mP40s on a 56 gallon tank. Plenty of flow, in RC mode so it's varied. The problem is I can't make the pumps higher due to the overflow, so I need to lower the rocks. I chose Tonga sticks for my new scape
I'll me making one that's only 5 or 6" tall
At its highest point so the corals don't inevitablely block the flow.

Also, I am having a snail issue.

Also it's hard to work around them given they are tall

It's these three things that rendered my decision to change the rocks. If it was one or the other I'd deal with it, but since it's all 3, I'm changing.

Just break the rock that the clam is attached to down to a smaller piece. This way the clam can stay attached to its rock and you can hide it within the tonga rock

Then really take one off. You don't need 15000 gph on one side of a 55 gallon tank. It's over over kill

Solved my clam issue. Don't worry about how many power heads I have. I really don't have time to explain everything about my system right now but the two is fine becuase of how the programming works.
