its an old post but subject is good. anyways i have a korallin sulphur denitrator. i have used it for 2 years now. my nitrates were 80+ all the time now they are 0. it does work. but i also ran into someproblem with the unit itself. i had it gravity fed via a 1/4 tube. after 3 months or so i noticed the drip rate started to slow down and a white film started to form on the inside of the tubes on the output side. i thaught it was the tube cloging up. i replaced the tube but same result. even when i increased the flow to max it still put out 1 drop per second. also bad rotten egg smell. i have crashed a tank before due to hydrogen sulphide poising so i carry hydrogen sulphide test strips that measure it from 0 to 100. when i checked the output it was putting out 40ppm and tank itself was 5ppm i lose 2 clams and some mushrooms. i got to the bottom of the problem by finding out that gravity fed system doesnt have enough pressure to push small particles if stuck in the tubes and slow water down. so i moved to a pump fed situation. i have a 1/2 pipe running my reactors and chiller so i T off with a 1/2 x 1/4 x 1/2 bought from usplastics.com. so i pressure fed it now and its running smooth.
also regarding the drip rate on these. once after 4-6 weeks its set in with good bacteria. it starts dropping nitrates. after it reaches near 0 you should increase it from 1 drop per second to several drops per second. coz once it reaches near zero u will start getting hydrogen sulphide if ran slow.
mine now after being set in and 0 nitrates its running at a very steady broken stream. its not a straight stream but pretty close to it, you can see drips in it. it will produce some nitrites at this point as u just up the flow but dont panic it will stop in few days.
i hope that helps some and if i am wrong somewhere please advise as i am also looking to perfect my experience in saltwater reefing.
