Sump/brittle star question

I have a 75g DT with a 20g long sump which is split into skimmer section, pump section, 5" sand bed with chaeto algae.

I am reading the book "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist:..." by Robert M. Fenner. In this book he suggests putting a brittle star into the DSB portion of the sump to eat the detritus and turn the sand to prevent hydrogen build up. Is this a good idea?

your thoughts would be appreciated.

IMHO, the best place for a brittle star (especially a green BS) is the sump. Left to fend for themslves in your main system they will find your sleeping fish a quite tasty snack.

On the other hand, serpant stars seem to do quite nicely in the DT
