Sump bubbles trap spacing

What is the minimum or maximum spacing between the 2 glasses when building the bubble trap in sump

Most use the smaller side of a 2x4 for baffle spacing, just lay 2 between the baffles while attaching and let dry overnight.

Well, from the standpoint of effectiveness, the wider the spacing the better, since the flowpath for a bubble to get through the trap is longer (and it therefore has a greater chance of getting to the surface and breaking). But that takes up more room in your sump.

I've seen and built traps with spacing anywhere from 1/2" to 3". All of them worked, but the 1/2" spacing required a bit lower flowrate than I desired to work effectively.

2x4 spacers (really 1.5").

Just make sure that whatever distance you use to space the baffles, you use that same distance to raise the center baffle off the floor.

From what I have read 1" is ideal. Wider spacer slows the water flow. One would want the water to move fast through the sump, unless it is going through a refugium.

Just space them far enough apart so that when something inevitably falls inside the baffles, you can remove it easily.

Yes, I measured the width of my forearm (slightly squeezed) where the tips of my fingers can touch the bottom of the sump between the baffles and that's how far apart I set the baffles. Lol. Makes cleaning very easy.

Spacing the baffles doesn't slow sump flow rate.

the mass flow rate will be the same. Slower velocity but greater volume.

Slowing the velocity through the baffles allows airbubbles better time/chance to float up.

Remember, slower velocity but greater volume means same mass flow rate. Doesn't slow the sump down one bit.

Also keep in mind that baffles are a great place for heaters and most you will need 1.5" min.

Hello All - New guy to the forum - I joined specifically to find out the answer to this question.

I am planning on building this sump design.

How are you guys getting silicone on both sides of the glass if you space them 1" apart.

I assume you are only sealing one side of the baffle?
