Sump help needed!

Just bought a eshopps sump and overflow from fintastic. It's a single overflow box and prebuilt sump.

I set the thing up. Soft tube that comes with it for overflow and hard pipe return. I got the thing running and it's super loud!

Setup goes from the overflow box through the tube into a filter sock. The stock is where it gets really loud splashing.

This is my first sump and I will not be able to life with the noise. Any thoughts?

If it is at all possible for you I would suggest drilling the tank. I didn't when I had the chance and have been kicking myself since then. I've even been contemplating braking down my tank just to drill it. I have a cpr overflow and although it's not extremely noisy I wish it were silent.

I saw a video on youtube where a guy was complaining about the noise from his overflow box and what he did to stop the noise was where the sponge part is in the back over the drain, he stuck a little piece of airline or something in the top part of the sponge down into the drain pipe to interupt the suction and it quieted it almost instantly. You should try that before you do anything drastic.

Look into the "herbie" overflow method. I had issues with overflow noise until I setup my overflow with a herbie. Basically you have 2 drains. I plumbed my tank so my overflow has the 2 drains and then my return lines go up and over the back of my tank.

This is a SUPER long thread and it's by the guy who originally thought up the concept. But you can check this out and look it up on a search engine and find tons of examples. I hope this helps. I understand your frustration because my tank is right behind my sofa in the living room. So I need it as quiet as possible. I also tried all those other methods like putting airline tubing into the durso. It didn't work for me. If you need pics I will be happy to show you.

Also, make sure your drain line into your sump is below the water line so you don't hear the "waterfall" into your sump. It wont affect your flow at all.

I got lucky with my first sump. It was quiet but instead of using a filter sock, I used a filter bag. I have the tube going into the bag, secured with a rubber bag to hold in place. It cleans and polishes the water at the same time. this is also one tips that Steve gave us at the meeting, the filter sock material can also be mage out of felt hobby material sewed in a bag. Cheap enough to throw away not have to washed. One of my husband's nicknames for is "cheapolene".

what does your overflow look like i have a life reef overflow, mine was noisy when i set it up but i made a cover out of acrylic and cut the noise right down.

add another overflow hole and flextube...or slow down the flow. i would go with A.

also a lrg pvc fitting for the water to fall in (with one part of y for flex and the other for air) the water will fall in that and it will contain the splash. i use this for 3 drains.

Slow the flow with a valve on the return. Also use a 45 under water on the drain. Two things that helped my tank. Even drilled tanks can get loud.

And mine is proof positive that tanks can be dead silent. The loudest thing I have is the Vortech. :)

The tank is in my home office and since I'm a phone tech support guy, I can NOT have noise in the background.

What are you using for a return? Too much or too little flow will make it noisy. Also what kind of noise are you talking about? If it's a gulping noise then the tubes in the drain might help.

Update. Sump is running and I used 1/4 airline and it cut the noise down. I'm gonna try some larger airline as I'm not sure enough air is escaping.

It's "livable" the way it is.

Now all I need is a in sump skimmer. I'm thinking bubble Magnus. My buddies have the hang on versions. Which is just a cone skimmer with a hanging kit. They seem to do a good job.

Thoughts?
