Sump Makeover

I see, got it. How is that skimmer compared to the euro-reef?
Hey Jeff,
Having never owned a euro-reef, I really can't comment on the performance comparison. All I can say is that depending on how wet I skim, I pull out 1/4- 1/2 collection cups of skimmate a day. The union for the collection cup is very similar to the euro reef, very easy to remove and doesn't require much over head clearance.
When I purchased this skimmer, the sedra pump included had the regular impeller, not the needlewheel....I don't know if that's still true. I replaced my impeller with a needlewheel.

Man nice job on the DIY sump! Ive always wanted to work with acrylic and make something DIY....Where is the best place to buy the acrylic?

Thanks Sohal....I found that with any DIY, the success depends alot on the tools you have available.

Knowing how to use the tools also require skill. Not many people can do what you do with the best tools available. I am one of them...:D

You can buy sheets of acrylic at HD or Lowes.

The bulkhead for the external pump is on the end of the sump behind the fuge. The pump is behind the ca and kalk reactors.
Here's a shot with the reactors removed.

tptp : I'm not running a sock...I'm too lazy to change and clean it.

Hi glaudds,

Is that the fitting (1/4 tube?) that goes to your calcium reactor? If so, can you please tell me where you purchase that fitting.

Thanks,
Jeffrey

How did you get the sump into the stand? Did you have to cut a brace out or something? I'm about to do the same and would like to hear your experience

I cut a hole in the side of the stand. I replaced the opening with the cut out piece trimmed with molding.

I briefly considered removing the center brace and temporarily bracing with an auto jack or 2x4 with shims.

Hi Jeffrey,

If memory serves me right, it's a 1/2 mpt x 3/8 insert. I know they have them at lowes or you can order them from savko,,,

Thanks, glaudds. I will definitely used your thread as examples to setup my tank later on. One question about the calcium reactor. So, you're using a 1/2" tube to connect to your reactor? I was just curious, because most of the calcium reactor I've known only used 1/4" tube. Anyway, thanks for the site.

You're right, I checked the hose and it looks like it has a 1/4" inner diameter. ...sorry for the premature senior moment.:D
