sump pricing

DIY. Despite what the sellers of 'luxury' sumps might wish you to believe, there isn't a great deal of science behind making your own.

BOOM!... Sump pricing is really ridiculous... As suggested a local glass shop or job shop that has acrylic, watch a few youtube vids and you'll be all set.

I built my 9g sump with 1/2" acrylic in one day for $100 total.

same here. glass shop down the road cut and edged 5 baffles for me from 1/4" glass for about $50. had it turned around in a day.

i gave them the measurements over the phone, everything came back just as i specified it.

spent a few hours slopping silicon on it, let it dry and cure, and they're solid.

the only down side was that i didn't test fit/properly measure the opening in my stand, and the 55 gallon i used wouldn't fit. ;)

so now i have a lovely custom sump as a centerpiece in my basement.

what are some better skimmer options that are in tank and dont have a giant 5in by 10in footprint?
and arent 250$.

First off $250 is cheap for a skimmer. If your going to spend $100 now then lets say $250 later you spent $350 why not buy a $250 skimmer to start with and save $100? 2nd a 5x10 would fit in that sump so I don't see why that matters. What you want is a space saver skimmer. I'm not saying the brand you are looking at is bad I don't know it. I'm saying the skimmer is to small. I would look on BRS and Marinedepot at space saver skimmers. Eshopps Makes a nice skimmer maybe look at the PSK100. I know the brand skimmer your looking at makes a bigger skimmer as well. Think of it this way you are going to spend $100s on fish in coral why would you want to risk them by getting a skimmer that is to small? That skimmer can only handle around 35 gallons of heavy BIO load.

that all works but i alrdy have fish and corals, so unless im going to run without skimmer for another 2-4 months before i can get one of these brand name skimmers then i was gonna spend the extra and get this one first. but i understand what your saying.

heres my new design for the sump, tell me if it would work.
obviously if i got a different skimmer i may have to modify.

I would skip putting two baffles after the skimmer because of space. A 20 long is not that big over all and you don't need two. The height of the first baffle would be set by the skimmer. Also I wouldn't make the last baffle shorter because you want as much water as you can get by the return pump. You can get 3 pretty even chambers out of a 20 long.

yea i found a glass shop here for dirt cheap so i can just make the sump myself.
sfish so would i be safe with a 7.5 in tall baffle first and then just three more say, 7in, baffles for the bubble trap?

also i got an offer for a like new nyos quantum 120 skimmer in my email for 225 bucks. not sure if thats a good skimmer or not

You have to look up what the skimmer is rated for. For the height it should say how deep of water the skimmer has to sit in keep in mind the water will end up a little bit higher then the baffle it self. For the middle baffle I made it slightly longer then the rest. On mine I ended up going 8" and then about 10" on the one baffle. Also keep in mind you want room for the water from the over flow and the return if the power goes out.

ok cool, yea im thinking about buying that sca 180 for the price and it being new. I guess i could shell out 80 more bucks

Probably the cheapest and much better then the 301 or what ever it is

ok sweet. looks like its got a 9x9.5 footprint but i think that will still fit. Although i may make my first chamber 10 inches and the refugium one smaller to make sure it fits.

water depth prefered is still 7inches.
