Sump question

I have a 55gal tank that is 6 months old now. We have a protein skimmer and filter that both hang off the back and also an RO/DI system.

Can someone tell me what the advantage is of having a sump because to be honest I'm not sure what they are or what they do? Is it the same as a refugium?

Ive noticed this come up in several threads that I've read so Im trying to figure out if this is something else that I need to be doing…or not.

A sump will give you a central place to put your equipment. Such as heaters and other acessories. It will also increase your water volume as well. If you stay with this hobby for long. You will out grow the hang on the back equipment , like I have. If you do decide to get a sump get the largest one you can for the space that you have. Once you have a sump you will love the convenience it gives you.

I appreciate the explanation. Do you have any recommendations for one?

A lot of folks will make their own from another aquarium. If your even the slightest bit handy they are easy to make.

some folks will also incorporate a refugium section into their sump. I use mine strictly for equipment.

I have the Trigger system emerald series sump. I really like it. It's true you can make a sump. I have gone that route. However a well made sump from a company like trigger systems, are hard to beat. They have several series of sumps. Crystal, Ruby and Emerald. Do a bit of research. You will see features in all of them, that I'm sure you will like. Just be sure to get the largest sump you can.

I have used an Aqueon sump and am just starting a new tank build with a trigger systems emerald sump. Like everyone has said before go with the biggest you can. I did a lot of research before buying this newest sump and the little bit of initial leak test and plumbing checks I have done with the emerald sump shows me it is good stuff. I don't use the refugium section as a refugium I use it for equipment like a bio pellet reactor.
