Sump question

I'm gettin the crazy idea of actually installing one after 4 years of been in the hobby :). What size would it be good for a 125? and what kind of overflow would I need. The tank is not drilled and it's running, also how many GPS pump. Thanks

I actually thought about this, since I was going to get a 125 and thought that perhaps 2 seperate 30 gallon setups would be awesome.

Basically buy 2 of everything, 2 30 gallon sumps, 2 protein skimmers, 2 return pumps. May be overkill, but thats probably what I'm going to do for the 210 when I finally buy it.

I dunno, sounds like a good idea to me...lol If one pump dies, you still have filtration going on.

I don't know seems too complicated for me. Would be easier to just do one 60 gallon sump, and keep an extra pump on hand for a just in case (if you're worried about the pump dying)

You could use one tank, was just thinking there may be some advantage to splitting it up. Covering more surface area at once or something.

sytanek- that sounds like a really good idea to me

fwiw I have a 55g on my 75g but Im pretty sure that is overkill but since it is my first tank I didnt want to take any chances.

a 55 might work then but I'll have to cut one of the side panel of the stand to be able to put it in, the only access is from the back and there is no way I'll take my tank down for that, what about the pump and overlow? also baffles any websites that shows plans for it?

This is what I've done, based on several designs combined together I found on Melev's reef.

I bought 2 1500 gph overflow boxes from MarineDepot.com. They work perfect. I love them, there not to loud either. For my sump I bought a used 55 gal tank and had it drilled at Sea In The City. For setting up the baffles Im just copying Sea In The Citys sumps. There simple and easy to do, plus they dont mind if you look at theres for ideas. For as what size sump to go with is go as big as you can. The more water volume the better.

I would do a 55g but make sure you can get it in or put it in before you put the tank on top, I made the mistake today of having my 90 full of water and rock and sand only to find out I can't get the 20G long in there, had to move everything out and my back is killing me.

Are the overflows CPR that's all I can see at the site.

This is going to be a project the tank it's been running for a little over a year and I'll have to cut the side of the stand to fit the tank in. Now what pumps are you guys using? any problems with floding?

Yes the CPR is what I bought. They used to have different sizes though. Go to Auqucave.com and they have the different sizes. I think a little cheaper also. I bought 2 of the CPR CS150 and i also bought the aqua lifter pump. That is a must have. Its totaly worth the 10 bucks.

The pump im using is a Pan World 250PS. I have a 150 and its not doing what I want. I need more water flow. Its rated at 1900 gph but with the 6ft of head and all the plumbing im guessing somewhere around 1300 gph.

I personally wouldn't use a cpr style overflow. They are not as efficient in restarting siphon as a u-tube style overflow is.

I would definitely look into getting a u-tube overflow. I know that lifereef makes some really nice ones but they are pretty expensive. They are all the same general design, though.

If you do use the CPR, like lusenut said, make sure you have an Aqualifter to keep the siphon going. Inexpensive and works great.

Really you would rather use a U tube over flow. I had 1 of those and hated it, I couldnt wait to get rid of it. I didnt even sell it I gave it away. lol The CPR is a not a good over flow without the Aqualifter. It is a must. Since I got it I have had no problems with it at all. I have gone a month and I havent had to touch it yet. It works amazing.

lol I have 3 U-tubes 2 of them work great never had to re-siphon, the third I'm still working on making it work lol.
