Sump questions

Ok, all inhale ever had is canister filters. My new tank has a sump underneath. What I have is water from tank comes down into on baffle and them runs into another spot and that area is bigger and has some live rock and also my Diablo skimmer in there, it then goes from there to another spot that my return pump is hooked to. Question is do I put any media in there anyweres beside live rock? There is a filter sponge between the spot were my skimmer is and the return.

How many gallon tank do you have? You have a few options. Get a grow light and grow chaetomorpha or use Marine pure ceramic biomedia block(s). There is a ton of discussion on these in the chemistry forum. Basically they work incredible and will starve chaeto of nutrients it needs to work. BUT some have mentioned that their leather corals suffer. Again YMMV on that since nobody knows why some fail where others greatly succeed.

Another option is Zeovit reactor. The least involved of all of these is the Marine pure ceramic biomedia as far as maintenance.

Oh one more real option is an Algae scrubber. They also work wonders when done right or purchased from a reputable source. All that being said do your research and then decide what is right for you.

The large more static area where you have your LR is where most of the above stuff would need to reside. My vote is on the block. Cheers!

Is there any specific problem you are trying to solve?
A sump with just a skimmer and return pump is just fine...
Whatever else you want is up to you/your needs/issues,etc...

Could put sand and Chaeto instead of skimmer in second, then have Diablo in first(if the first chamber is big enough) with the love rock/bio media block.
