hi all
as the title states i need help in setting my new sump up

i got an all glass 30 gallon tank (new) that i will be using for the sump
i just need to know how high i should put in the baffles, where to put them how many to put in and any thing else i would need to know
also please note this will be an ECOSYSTEM MUD sump

i want to do a mud fuge for ease of maint and the slow release of key minerals and elements that a mud sump setup is known for

also any web sites to help me would be great
and plz chime in with any advice on what you did with your sump and what you would do better with it

wednesday is my day off and i will be going to the window glazier that day

Just make sure that your first chamber is large enough to put the protein skimmer your palnning to use so it gets the "raw" water from the display tank. Then use the other chambers for dosing, filters, monitors, etc. THe depth should be at the depth of where the protein skiimer works best- that way the skiimer is always running efficiently ( constant water level surrounding it) .

Remember to have the return section rather large also. That is where evaporation will show. Using an auto top-off will allow a smaller return section though.

** Lowes / Home Depot will cut glass to any size you need rather cheap :D

Very good DIY sump site:

i figure the 1st chamber at 7" wide with the first half of the baffle rising 6 1/2 inches then 1 inch open area then 7-8 inches on top of the baffle
second baffle would be 10 inches to be the end of the fuge (20 inch fuge)
then the final baffle 8 inches from about 1 1/2 inches forom the bottom
leaving an 8 -9 inch return secton to the tank

remember this is going to be an ecosystem sump (no skimmer - i will from time to time use my hv1 hangon excalibur w/ maxijet needle wheel mod) how does this sound?

Greatgman,
Is your primary concern with the baffles (bubble trap) to eliminate micro bubbles? If so I would make that first baffle as tall as you can so more of the micro bubbles will go to the surface.

reefbox i have the 1st baffle at 12 inches high

also i fouind that the flow thru the fuge was WAY to slow
so i mt'd it out and siliconed a few 2x2 inch glass squares to the
2nd baffle so now i have two square openings to the fuge

flow is much better but i seem to not have much flow untill i get a few inches away from the baffle then it picks up nicely
