Sump Size Advice

Hi Everyone,

I've been in the hobby for a little over 5 years now and I am currently in the process of upgrading to an 80 gallon tank with a sump. I'm having a lot of trouble deciding on what size sump I should throw under my tank. Sumps are completely new to me since I've always ran all-in-one nano tanks. I've been researching sump sizes and using the calculators, but I'm still unsure of what I need. I'm planning on having a custom sump built, so I want to make sure I do it right the first time. If anyone has some advice/recommendations, it would be greatly appreciated.

The sump will be going under an 80 gallon tank w/ corner overflow. Internal dimensions of the stand are 30"Lx25"Wx36"H. I hear it is best to go with the biggest you can fit, but I also have to go with what I can afford. I was planning on going with a sump with the following dimensions:

Sump = 25"L x 20"W x 15"H.

ATO Res. Attached = 5"L x 20"W x 15"H.

10" water level for skimmer.

Left to Right sections w/ Lengths = ATO Res 5" / Return 5" / Fuge 8" / Skimmer 9" (leaves 3" for baffles, not sure how much room these need. Dimensions can be adjusted slightly.)

Return bulkhead is approx 4" from the top of the tank. I do not have an overflow installed yet. 1" return, 1.5" overflow (planning durso).

Planned Skimmer: SWC Xtreme 160 Cone 9"L x 7"W x 20.58"H. 7-10 inches Depth recommended.

My calculations show that the sump will be approximately 32 gallons, but I have no idea how much room I will have to accommodate backflow. Do you guys think these sump dimensions will be adequate, or should I re-evaluate my setup?

Thanks
