sump

Must have:

- Return pump

Can Have:
- ATO sensor

- Heater(s)
- Media Reactor
- Dosing pump outlets
- Sensors (pH, conductivity, temperature etc.)
- Calcium reactor
- Refugium
- Rock
- Pumps to external skimmers, reactors, etc
- ...

Everything you do not want in your display tank. A minimum list, other than drain line and return pump:

Skimmer and/or alternative filtration like an ATS
Heater
ATO switch

Nice things to have include:

Dosing pumps or a CA reactor for stony coral
Reactors for GFO or carbon as needed
A fuge section to grow macro-algae or keep extra rock (or in my case a place to grow cyano and hair algae)

My sump/refugium is 10' x 2' x 18". I just have a return pump section (45g), 2 filter socks and a skimmer section (45g) and some 'extra' live rock. I have a refugium section (45g) and a DSB (Deep Sand Bed) section (also 45G with 8" of sand) at the end of my sump. I dose from 2 5g jugs that drip into the return area of the sump. I don't run any reactors, GFO or carbon. My auto top off system is me adding about 2-3 gallons of RO/DI water every couple of days,
