sun coral

last weekend i obtained a yellow sun coral. i aclimated slowly for about a hour and then put it in the tank. since then it has not come out to my knowledge. I've checked at night and in the morning and still havent seen it out. I put food in by it and still nothing? how do you tell if they are dead, is this usual for this type of coral? thanks for the help!

Do you have it in a cave, because they usually do not like to be exposed to direct light. Also, do you have cleaner shrimp, because when you spot feed (cyclopeeze?) they tend to feed in the vacinity keeping the polyps from opening to feed. Too heavy a flow can also be a problem because it washes the food away before the polyp can open. If that is the case, you may have to place a plastic cup over the coral when you feed so it has enough time and protection to eat. Good luck!

I have watched my sun coral slowly die away. They need spot feeding - and when I did, it extended. I usually fed at night, and I have it out of the direct light. I hope you have better luck than i have had.

I have a sun coral that began to wither. I started target feeding it frozen brine shrimp every other day and it has done great ever since. I also keep it in a low watt/gallon tank and I keep it sheltered from direct light.

Frozen shrimp? I was using cyclopeze. I think it might be too late for mine though. The LFS should have told me to target feed this thing. Unscrupulous!! Roozen's in MD.
