Sun Powered Reef

Vitor, I have no doubt that you can see a lot of really cool critters, but there are a number of critters that grow and live only in deep shadeand slow water.

I have to join the rest and say that your tank truly is beautiful.
It is also great to see/read that you have put a lot of thoughts into the design. And you seem to have thought about every question people have asked prior to them asking.

Very beautiful.

Hi UrbanSage!

This project is totally new, therefore i had to think ahead in all details.

Hi Opcn!

That's true, those i can't see... nothing is perfect, i had to sacrifice somethings.

All the best

I love this thread!! One question, did you have any problems with the corals bleaching? I know going from artifitial light back to natural sun light has got to be a huge jump for the corals zoos. From the growth your getting, im sure they recovered super quick! I would love to run a big sunlight in my room now, or even have a greenhouse now, . Best of luck!!

Michael

Hi Michael!

No my friend, no bleaching, i've made some testes with corals from diferent aquariums, all reacted iqual, i noted that the colors became more intense, less brown, maybe because of the natural UV light from the sun.

i love your tank vitor!!! my question is how do you get into the tank where you are stacking your corals and live rock? i see how you get the lid open, but do you climb in there to place stuff. and if you do climb in do you use a snorkel???

Hi jasonj90!

No, i can reach with my arm almost every part of the tank (20" Hight, 40" depth), no need for a snorkel.

Great update, I love it when your showing off vitor

How soon before you are looking at the mirror project for your tank? I'd reckon that this will be your real challenge, but I have no doubt you'll pull it off.

I'm just wondering about your thoughts on the mirrors, such as size, location, asthetics ( if your worried about this or not). I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Cheers my friend, be chatting :)

Chris

Hi Chris!

At this time of the year the sun is to high, i have to wait until October/November so that the sun inclination is the correct.

Cheers

Vitor Pestana

No worries mate, I think I can wait that long:lol:

In the meantime i'll enjoy your beautiful tank, especially when you update your pictures.

Cheers

Very nice and innovative setup Vitor!

I may have missed it in the previous posts but I don't think I saw anything that describes the plumbing between your display tank and sump. It looks like your sump is above the level of the tank, is that correct? How do you move the water between the two? Do you pump from the display tank to the sump and let it overflow from the sump and gravity feed back to the display tank?

Larry

Hi there,

Lovely idea you got. Did not read whole thread but what do you do for gas exchange. I see your system is nearly entirely closed off to the atmosphere?
