I only use moon lights for night time viewing so as not to disturb the tank.
I have seen more polyp extension and more amphipod activity in total darkness in the middle of the night greater than when I did use moonlights. IMO, the more PE and the more activity for the cleaner crew, the better.
As far as the moonlights and its assocation with coral spawing, I don't want mine to, when SPS spawn they release most of thier energy to do so and pollute the tank while doing it.
Though it is best to simulate the ocean as much as possible, its hard to quantify the effects of moonlights and split lighting schedules using actinics only.
I do have my actinics on an hour earlier and later than my MHs, but its probably more for me so I can enjoy it lit longer daily.
It would definitly look cool to have an LED setup like the Solaris that could be used as supplementation and in the last hour and first hours gradually change to red for that simualtion.
But I think it would be more for our viewing pleasure than for the tank. Never seen it myself, interesting idea though.
