Superman Monti pics

Hello all, I posted this in the Reef Discussion forum, but it was suggested that I post it here so here it is.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a second frag of Superman monti at a local frag swap. I have never seen a full grown, or at least a matured Superman. Does anyone have any pics of any?

Here is mine.

Good looking corals. I cant wait to see these things get big.

Bigmatt, why do you say they are not Superman monti's? What are they? You were awfully quick to say they are not, but offered no substantiation to you're comment.

Thanks for the pics guys.
Are these corals not very common? Why don't we see any big full blown pieces?

Thanks

What he's saying is that they are not the lineaged SM's, based on color and growth. Those look like the maricultured montis coming out of Bali (I've got some of those, as well). Side by side, you can easily see the difference. That's not saying what you've got isn't nice, but the lineage naming can be a touchy subject (means different things to different people-somethign just don't compare, while others seem just as good or better than the lineaged counterpart)).

The second pic is actually looking more like one of the maricultured rainbows (hints of orange and green in the polyps on the right edge of it). When I got mine, I ended up with a maricultured of each the 'pokerstar', 'superman', and 'wonder woman' montis. IMO, the pokerstar and rainbow are the same. Mine came in with green polyps, but quickly turned to rainbow colors to my delight. The mari rainbow I have will stand up to any other rainbows I've seen, but I haven't had either of the mari SM's look like the lineaged SM. The first mari SM I got is really starting to color up in the growth edges, but has developed a few intermixed green polyps along the colony. I'm wondering it the polyps will continue changing colors.

The pieces are becoming more common because of the mariculturing. They usually come in around 2-3", but either get hacked up, or are eaten with nudis and don't make it very long. They grow pretty quick once they get going, though. The lineaged SM is a much slower grower for me than the mari SM's, etc.

Interesting, thanks for some clarification gflat65.
So is the one in my first pic a a maricultured SM then? Or is it just a monti that is red and blue? The guy I bought it from is one of the most trusted guys in CO, with some of the nicest stuff you'll ever see. I had no reason to doubt him when he had it advertised as Superman.
gflat65, is the pic you posted the real Superman then?
How about some pics bigmatt.

Thanks for all the info folks.

No one could say without a doubt that yours is maricultured (unless they opened the box and sold it to you, etc.), but it is similar to my maricultured. The one I posted is supposed to be lineaged SM. There is so much variation due to conditions (flow, nutrient, lighting, etc.), that to speak in absolutes is rarely justifable. All I have to go on is the guy who traded this one to me that it is lineaged...

This is a thread from a few years ago on the SM. Some of the names listed in the first post were who many got them from. I'll hvae to get more info from the guy I got mine from:). I had one originally sourced through copps (from a guy in East Tn), but lost it in the move. It looked very similar to my new one.

So whether or not a montipora is a superman montipora from the correct lineage means that it has to grow slower than the other ones?

They both fetch the same price frag wise, and 9 times out of 10 you can't tell the difference.

Wow gflat65!! What a great thread. So that's where it all started.
So basically what I have come to the conclusion of is that a Superman is not always a Superman. Like a coke, is not always a "Coke". But just a monti that resembles a Superman.
I will try and get in touch with the guy I bought it from and see if he knows anything about it.
None the less I love the coral. I do have another monti that I was told was a Superman also. It is not in a great place in my tank to take pics of but I will try. I definitely looks different from the one I originally posted a pic of here.
Thanks again for the info.
I would still love to see some more pics of some Supermans, and of some "Supermans"........

Thanks

Ultimately, it comes down to if you like it buy it, if not, look for something you do;). I'd bet that the vast majority of people couldn't trace most lineaged things back. If someone is really looking for the lineaged piece, they'll question the seller until they are satisfied with the answers. If I get lineaged pieces, it is usually through trades, or locals that don't charge an arm and a leg for them. In some cases, the lineaged piece holds color better and achieves better color, while in other cases, there would be no telling them apart without someone giving lineaged if asked. The biggest thing with lineage that I can see is that you know what it can achieve in terms of color, based on the marketers pictures. That and trade value to high end collectors (for other nice things). The challenge in many cases becomes making them match the color in the original pictures...

For me, I absolutely love the piece I got. I never really questioned it's lineage nor the fact what it's name really is.
My interest was merely peaked after the responses I received here. Regardless of what it is called or the correct lineage, I love it.

Thanks for all the education and information.

Great looking animals everyone. Lets see some more, keep the pics coming.

It fascinates me how everyone always argues over names. if you bought it as a Superman. then thats what it is.. I have a frag that was bought as a Superman and it looks like a Superman so therefore it IS a Superman,, how do you think the first one got its name? It LOOKED like a Superman so it was a Superman.. all the above look like Superman and were probably sold as Supermans so as far as im concerned they are Supermans.. WoW did I say Superman enough,, ok now all you experts can tell me how closed minded I am

You're not closed minded, you're very open minded.

I have two bluish montis with reddish polyps. One was sold to me as a "True Superman" and it looks like what Viper 930 showed. It came from DaddyJax's colony. The other is more pale. Here's a picture of DaddyJax's piece from an old thread of his:

I've yet to see a better looking "Superman".
