I just won this frag on ebay of "superman" montipora for $56 from a LFS about 30miles away. The guy says its a superman montipora but i havent seen a superman that looks like this. Does this look what what he says it is?? I thought supermans had really defined bumps or ridges?? Did i waste my money?? I know we are suppose to buy what we like but i dont know if i like it yet cuz im not sure if its a real superman. I havent seen any soo smooth before. Any input??

Is it a real "Superman", what defines that for you? Is it lineaged back to that original piece that was dubbed the "superman" or is it an AC version that flooded the stores after the popularity of the coral. Is superman just a red polyped, blue coral then?

For 56 bucks that isn't a bad deal per se, but since lineage is a matter of trust then you should obtain such pieces only from reputable dealers or those whom you trust......no one can tell from ebay or online sources....which I would never participate in on pieces I am really wanting. Being there and inspecting the piece and the character of the person is paramount in my opinion. That is what RC is for, build that network for the future....this way it also builds your rep. in the community for future transactions. It also is a way to document where it came from.

However DNA does not lie, and the real piece in contact with another "real" superman will grow together. I had an AC version of the Superman, and it was alright.....grew crazy fast and was only bright blue in the high light.

I have the "real" one now and it is on the bottom of the tank....just as baby blue as it can be.

So......my guess.....its AC, but I don't know for sure and perhaps this is a reputable seller.....but I have seen my fair share on not on ebay.....I guess if it matters to you......check it out first and get to know the person and check them out within the reefing community. If you looking for a lineaged, real deal superman......then find and buy one from someone/where you know and can trust. Thats how I have always done it in the past.

Believe it or not, building relationships and networking is half of being in this hobby......build one with a dealer you can trust and respect.....this is what I have done. Don't worry about the cash so much as putting a down payment on mutual trust and respect, don't try to always "get the best deals" or "get ahead".......and in the end you will.

So do you want the colors or the pedigree is what I would ask?

Yea i have some friends that ive made on thereeftank.com but i have to wait a few months. Ive been dying for a REAL tyree Superman and the Rainbow montipora and also the Pokerstar. Those are my 3 most sought after montis im searching for. The only thing i dont like is that the tyree superman from what ive seen has orangeish polyps not candy apple red. I dont know why steve tyree would name it a superman if its not Blue with Red polyps. Thanks for the insight. I do want the real things but its hard to find people that have them except like reeffarmers but it takes awhile to be on the waiting list.

All of those are around, and plenty have them.......just network a little and find it from those whom you trust.

BTW,

Tyree didn't name them.......do some research on the pieces, and read the paragraphs associated with them, even searching on Google or here for old threads about where they came from. Knowing this is a part of the lineage thing.........being into it without know where they came from is like being into Ferrari and not knowing why.......

It takes work (which is why SPS is so cool you can concentrate on lineage or identification, coloration questions, pest irradication).....but to get you started........

The Superman Danae came from Tubs, who is no longer in the hobby.....however Exotic Frags picked up where he left off.

The Rainbow came from Reefready.net.

www.frags.org is a good site for people like yourself to hookup with sellers with reputable ratings and pictures other than ebay.....I suggest looking here.

I'd be a little concerned with what you are going to get based on the blue hue of the frag rack grid its on. Probably a nice coral either way.

Just be aware that this coral is notorious for browning out when
transfered to a new system, so I would expect this in shipping.

Maybe when you get it you can take a picture of it and see if anyone can give any insight.

I have the Superman monti one person removed from Hugo Zuniga. I did ask Hugo for it but he didn't have one available. So my lineage to this LE coral is short only one person away. But honestly, mine is red and blue, not orange and blue as you said.

Good luck tho. Looks like a pretty coral either way.

This is a very true statement. they can go from superman to dog turd in a week.

Your question got me thinking today, I started a new thread to help people like yourself in the future.....hopefully it can get going and be a good future reference.
