im getting a little surface build up on my 29 gallon its not drilled i just run a h.o.b. bio wheel filter (penguin 200) with live rock in the tank to help. i only have 1 maxi jet 900 powerhead placed in the left hand corner in the middle of the tank... any suggestions on what i could do.. a cheap fix preferably

breutus i have a rectangular intake on my bio wheel is that an adapter that i see in the package or is that something else?

You attach the flexible piece to the intake of your Penquin 200 and the rectangular intake piece to the bottom of the surface skimmer. You adjust the skim height by both placement of the attachment in the tank and fine tune it with the center handle (screw adjustment). Ive see one at work on a friends 40 breeder and it works well once adjusted. The Hydor oscillating flow directors dont seem to do a darn thing other than hamper the output of whatever pump you put them on...I did see a Rio setup that might be able to be adapted to a Maxijet where it was a rotating set of two fan shaped flow directors that oscillated the output. Best bet is to use a Hydor Koralia pump for the corals and move the power head toward the surface (adjust the output to aim for the surface) & or find a spray bar from an Old Ehiem filter and plumb your Maxijet 900 output thru that to spray against the surface.

I never found one that fit perfect but I had one on a old penguin 400 that had the same rectangular type on it and the adapters are flexible so you just have to finigle with it for a while maybe even put a bit of silicone on it and make it work but it did the job really well

Temporary fix is to shut everything down and throw a paper towel across the entire surface and let it wick up all the surface protein. Then throw the towel away with the offending scum in it.
