a freind of mine was having an age old problem on a lightly skimmed mixed reef tank and that is protiens and crap oil or whatever leving a film on thw surface of the water.even a thin layer can greatly impead light or refract it wasting time and energy and not producing much growth color or health.i solved this problem years ago in my mixed reef with a dsb.aquaclear made a surface skimmer attachment to fit on the intake of filter and powerheads wich pulled water from the surface and the bottom.i hook mine up to a powerhead.well i was able to find one at a flee market for my friend to try and he had such a skum layer he bleached out a cute little brain he had from light shock with the new penatration of light into the tank he had the brain very close to the top and his tank hood made it so you realt couldnt see the protien skum on the water surface allowing it to build up so high.i bet allot of you our thiere could also bennifit from this.i dont no if they make this anymore but im sure you can find one if you dont have youre tank set to pull surface water to the sump this is a good solution.i wish i had a par meter to see the diff from full of skum to clear what it would read.
