surge and pump layout

i have a 30 gallon tank divided into 2 surges and am concerned my overflows wont be able to handle the water...therefore i was thinking if drew the water directly from the dt for the surges i would avoid my concern with the overflow... as a side benefit i thought that i would be adding some water movement to the display in that the pump is drawing water in and keep a steady water level in my sump so i dont negatively impact my skimmers performace....my problem with this is id like to avoid having pumps in my dt...so i was thinking could i just put the pump in the surge and have the intake plumbed down to the tank to pull the water up to the surge...then just have that pump fill the surges from up top...question is...would that pressure coming out of the pump be to much since i would have to buy a decent size pump to over come the height of th surge....also what pump would you guys recommend...thanks
 
Can you supply some more details. I'm not sure if the surge tank is 2 15 gal compartments of if you have a 30g DT with two surge pipes emptying into your DT. How high is the surge to be above the DT? Is the tank in your living room or basement or??
 
yeah its a 30 gal divided into 2....i think they call it a boreman style surge...one with the toliet bowl plummbing...i realize it not going to be 15 gals a surge and am guessing they will be 8 gals tops so 16 gals if they fire together...im just not sure if my overflows can handle it
 
If you don't want big clunky pumps in the tank you could do just bulkheads with a screen or something and have the pumps behind the tank on little platforms.

I saw you said its a 220, but what dimensions? How far is the water level from the top normally? If its say 72" long x 24" wide and you do a surge of ~25 gallons you need 3.5" of room or you go over the top. But if its 72" x 30" wide then you can hit 25 gallons with only 2.75".

I wouldn't really count on the overflows taking any of the water (who knows what could happen) so i would think about making room for it all instead.

In any event, 16g is 3696 cubic inches. You'll need two calculations--your tank and the volume of your overflow. Will your overflow hold 16g or will it "overflow?" If you have a 72x24 one inch of water would equal 1728cuin so you tank would need to handle a little over a 2" rise in the water level. If 72x30 your at a little less than 2" water rise for 16g.
 
Also You need to think about your inhabitants, are there any fish or is coral only? if there is fish they will be stuck to the suction side of the bulk head, to relive this issue, you should make a coast to coast overflow in addition to your normal overflow. nothing worst that to bring home a 100.00 fish and find it sucked apart in the morning.

I run one single over flow but I had to lower my stand pipes to be able to handle the volume, also your sump MUST always be able to handle the volume of your dump tank, even if you need to plumb a second overflow sump inline with your main.

I use motorized valves because of all the air, noise, and salt creep that you get with this type of system
