surge device question

im setting up a 180 mixed reef. im planning on sps corals in the top half and lps, zoos, rics, and clams on the bottom half. what im wondering is would 2 5 gallon surge devices set on alternating timers provide enough flow. it will be supplemented with the 1000gph return pump, and misc. powerheads. thanks for the help

By surge devices I assume you mean Carlson surge device? I've never set one up for my tanks, but have seen many in operation and have considered buildding one for my SPS tank. My understanding is that factors determining the flow isn't so much surge tank capacity, but the vertical distance between the surge tank and display tank, the diameter of siphon pipe and rate of fill pump.
