I'm subscribed to a thread. What does that do for me? Am I supposed to get any automatic links/notices? Is there something I need to do?

Go to quick links>subscribed threads.
Once there, you can view your subscriptions and make changes to them. If you want to change your notifications, select the read, then use the drop down menu near the bottom to change your notifications between none/daily/instant, or delete the subscription.
You can also go into the User CP and change your default settings when you reply to a thread.

That's after you pay the subscription fee's, if you do paypal it only takes a day.
