Sushi Nori to feed tangs?

I started feed my tang Sushi Nori as it's basically green seaweed, but at 1/4 the cost of your typical Green Marine Algae blend at the fish store. The fish love it. However, I'm seeing a huge green algae hair bloom as well as far more glass algae since I started. I'm wondering if anyone else is having issues with using sushi nori for tangs

thanks

Everyone thats been in the hobby for any amount of time, also is using sushi nori. Some even go as far as to get it at a Korean specialty store.

I also feed Nori 1/2 sheet, along with a Romaine lettuce leaf daily. I would be surprised if Nori wasn't loaded with Phosphates. I run carbon and have an ats but still need to clean the glass at least every other day - daily would be better.02+3

I have never checked, but you might want to soak a bit of Nori in some tank water than test for phosphates.

I feed 1/2 sheet nori daily to blonde naso and hippo tang. They love it. My phosphates run very high, over .5, and I have low bioload (11 fish in 175g total system). Sure that's the source of my phosphates but don't have algae issue other than needing to clean glass at least every other day.

Check the PH of my Nori. Salifert >3

Hanna ULR to high to register.

If you have high nitrates, you might consider carbon dosing to keep PO4 in check.

I vodka dose. it's reduced my nitrates to near 0 but my phosphates haven't fallen. I battled cyano during early stages of vodka dosing but conquered it, no other algae issues. IMG_6328.jpg

As an alternative to Nori, you should try Hikari Seaweed Extreme (S pellets). All the fish enjoy this including the yellow tang. They sink and sit at the bottom for awhile which allows tang to hunt and peck. What does not get eaten, the hermit crabs also enjoy cleaning up the leftovers. It won't dirty the water like nori does.
Its like $10 on Amazon and lasts a long time.

In regards to Nori, I tried about 10 different kinds ranging from Korean to Japanese, flavored with garlic, olive oil, salted/unsalted, etc. It was my experience that the tang really liked the minimally processed, unflavored Japanese-version the best.

You want raw nori that is not salted or flavored roasted.

I never used this in reef tanks, but my customers who had FOWLR tanks fed nori which was soaked in water and fish oil (or Selcon). Add a drop of fish oil to a little water, soak the nori until it's wet, then feed it to the fish. This may add too many nutrients to a reef tank, but it sure made for healthy tangs.

I feed 2 strips daily and haven't noticed and issue with phosphates. I buy them off Amazon, they come perforated so it's easy to tear them up.

I buy my nori from Walmart. I didn't know there were different flavors until I read it here. The Walmart sushi nori is plain seaweed. It's cheap, too.

I've seen packaged nori at Costco, but it seems to me Julian Sprung's bulk 100 sheet packs are cheaper. Not aware of Asian markets in my area. We don't even have a decent Chinese restaurant anymore. Have to check Walmart next time I'm there.

I have yet to come across unsalted and unflavored packaged nori at Costco. Even at the local Japanese or Korean stores, you have to search hard to find the plain, "natural" version of nori.
