SWEET! My mandarins are spawning!!!

Hi all!

I noticed a long time ago that my female had been hydrating with eggs (back in February or so and thanks to the help of MOFIB ). Last night, I finally caught them doing the dance!

I didn't get to watch closely enough to see if they actually spawned/spawned, IE eggs and sperm, but they were doing the cheek to cheek moves.

Here are some pics:

I bought a female just for this purpose, plus the fact that she was eating brine and I love mandarins.

I've been told that spawning occurs much more frequently when they're fed PE Mysis, so I'm going to have to find some. I can't really do anything with the eggs at this point, but this is definitely a huge step in the right direction for later when we have more space.

Man, I wish SA was closer... I'd love to take a bunch of eggs to them!

But nonetheless this is exciting!

mildly OT....i was at the critter today & they had a FAT green mandarin that was a good 3" long & about 3/4-1" wide :eek1:

i was soooooo tempted to buy it, but alas no proper tank to support it for now

I used to have a pair that would mate all of the time. I would see the eggs floatin in the water. These are very difficult to raise. Only a handfull have been reared in captivity. The main problem is a food source for the fry.You should look up the threads on here for breeding them. Some great info but not much in the way of positive outcomes,

Incorrect, CKreef. There has recently been a lot more success in rearing these little guys.

Well i stand corrected. When I had these guys breeding about a year ago there was little progress. Wish I had my pair now. Set up something and raise these guys.

CKreef, it was just about a year ago that progress was made. I think Wittenrich had his first hatch last February.

Figures mine would spawn all of the time!!! I looked up tons of info ut everyone washaving trouble getting small enough food. Oh well hindsight is 20-20

Needless to say, that is the biggest issue.

I think Wittenrich either has or is going to check their guts to see what the little guys are eating.

Hopefully in the next year or two cultured mandarins will be a definite reality! I think it would be absolutely awesome. Fewer taken from the wild, they'll be guaranteed to eat frozen as they'll already be weaned, and they should be readily available. Good stuff. :thumbsup:
