Cool, dont be afraid to post some pics, im 100% sure im going black sand after i move my tank next move. Im really heavy on acans, and i think this should give a better color contrast.
I have had my caribesea Hawaiian black sand for a year. It has all different grains and is not fine. Coralline grows fast on it (I don't know if that is good or bad). You will get shadows since you don't have the reflection. I don't notice any white particles in it. A few people on here has seen it in person and can vouch for it's blackness.
I think it looks fantastic and have been debating keeping a white sand bed or going bare bottom... This opens up a whole other door. What about vacuuming the larger grain size sand? Do you guy's not vac your sand beds?
If you use a shallow sand bed ~ 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch deep you shouldn't need to ever really worry about vaccuming it especially if you have things like nessarius and stars or gobies sifting through it. I have about 7 or 8 nessarius in my 29 bc and they turnover the sand realllllly well.
I had to use black sand as a request by my previous boss in her fowlr 20gal in her restraunt I think it looked great and had a lot of positive feedback from the customers. Too bad she retired and sold the place i heard now it's gonna be another drug store like we another one
