Synergy reef overflow?

Synergy has a vid about setting up on YouTube. I pre-ordered the new shadow for a new build and can't wait to get it. I was able to see it at RAP, very nice.

I read through some of these and I realize the post is a little older. The new version that is going to start shipping in a few days is all 1 piece injection molded so there are no seams now and the bulk heads are also molded into the overflow. The weir now simply locks into place I believe they will also be shipping with a spare weir. So you can clean one and have the other ready. The internal plumbing is also now partially included so you don't need by 90's to make the durso. In my opinion this is the best overflow system currently on the market. Also they come in a 1 1/2 diameter now to accommodate faster flow rate if desired. Its a bean animal overflow so flow will be what you dial in. Since its a bean animal overflow if you dial it in corrrectly to a full siphon you shouldnt hear any noise from the overflow itself.

I've always just done things using gravity and those aren't always the most silent. Hopefully I can get mine going without the gurgle.
 
I installed a 16" Synergy overflow on my 180g display and up and running for a bit over a week - still trying to tune it but I have questions for those with experience.

Bottom line is that I'm still getting a mild amount of bubbles coming out of the siphon line and I'm a bit freaked out that it's due to a plumbing leak that may get worse over time but dunno. It has not gone to bubble free after 2-3 days of running continuously. It does not seem to be impeding the flow rate of the siphon. My return pump is a Panworld 200PS with 16' head approx 1000GPH (I'm slightly restricting flow). On/off simulating a power failure and startup is perfect.

DT: 16" synergy with Siphon, Emergency, and Open channel. Siphon drains to a basement Rubbermaid stock tank sump about 15' below the overflow box. In the pictures the top pipes are the open channel, middle is emergency, and the bottom is the Siphon.

The siphon's path to the sump is:
1) Overflow (used ABS-PVC transition cement)
2) 2' to Gate valve
3) Union
4) 5' Flex PVC to basement to union (mostly vertical). I used FlexPVC glue for this.
5) Union
6) 1"PVC to 2 45degree elbows
7) 3' 1"PVC horizontal run (slightly at a downward angle)
8) 90degree elbow
9) Union to 5' PVC to sump - exit is ~1" below the waterline.

There are no drips of water anywhere. No sucking sound at the unions as far as I can hear. The Siphon in the overflow box is completely submerged although due to the high flow rate there are occasional bubbles in the overflow. I used FlexPVC specific cement for those connections and ABS-PVC transition cement at the overflow box. Cured for a long time.

Should I be worried about this? Again - tons of flow from the siphon just don't know why the bubbles are still there or where they are coming from or if I should care.
 
My first guess would be that you are simply sucking air bubbles that get into the overflow. If there is a little turbulence between the weir side and the overflow side this can happen. I had this as well until I messed with the heights of the suction and durso lines enough to eliminate it. Although, I have a sump under the tank, not the basement.
 
Just as I was ready to order, I read another post where the teeth on the internal overflows are cut too deep, it appears the ESShopps teeth are cut deep. My tank is a 40b with black trim. I don't want to have the water level 1" inch from the bottom of the trim. Modular Marine is opening back up in Sept. I will work with them to see if I can somehow adjust the internal overflow so either the teeth are higher or the internal overflow box can be higher. If I have to I will cut a piece of acrylic and block the lower portion of the teeth.

I went with Modular marine. It is on a 40B. I am having some issues with covers, but these guys are taking care of me big time. Construction is really great.

I had to raise my open channel to eliminate bubbles from

Do both your U pipes have holes in them? I just got my overflow and they both had holes. I thought only one was suppose to

They both do!
I think if you can get your siphon working with the hole, the idea is that it will empty it's air faster during a restart and go to siphon faster.
I ended up plugging mine with a small plastic screw and teflon but my siphon still starts in 20 seconds.

The thing that 'bothers' me about these overflows is the small size of the rear box. For folks that have used these at or near the maximum flow rates, do you get any splashing or feel that the box itself is too constricting?

Planning (or at least conceptualizing) a new build and trying to decide on the overflow approach, and whether to go off-the-shelf or just make one for myself.

Best overflow I ever owned.
If I had to drill a tank for a overflow I would buy one again.
 
I don't find it constricting it all. I can only guess that I'm pushing around 700 gph though mine on a 150 with Mag18 return (after elbows and rise etc.) and it's doing great.
There is some trial and error in getting it dialed in properly to ensure 2 things: the right height of water when running at normal which I have just below the tops of the 2 holes from the tank to the box, and the height(s) of the siphon and secondary.
Once dialed in it starts up super quick, runs almost silent if I don't have my WAV's on inside the tank.
the only problem I have with mine is the noise I create from turbulence caused by the WAV's which I prefer to have on the rear sides blowing across the overflow box.. I need to keep experimenting with flow inside the tank that minimizes turbulence going into the overflow box.
