t5 vs MH

Any local guys running t5s with SPS and getting good results.. all the research i am seeing it that in a shallow tank it almost seems to be a better option as long as you can deal with not having the shimmer effect... I have always used MH, but am looking for a more economical option for a 14inch deep tank... almost seems like with the right bulb combinations the T5s look better and have better coverage... if anyone has an opinion please throw it at me

I had great growth with 8 t5's on a 120. I did switch to a MH/T5 fixture as an upgrade but a 14" deep tank would be fine with the right T5's. I would only worry about you being OK with the look after being used to MH's.

I think some of it comes down to personal preference. Personally I like the look of metal halide and would not light a reef any other way.
That beign said, do a search on T5's and SPS, there are some people who have experienced bleaching.
Also, according to Eric Borneman, those glitter lines aren't just for your eyes only, apparently the corals like 'em too

Excellent point Porky but I am also bias.

I would also think about over driving the T5's. If you overdrive the T5's, I think the economics is identical to MH (possibly more expensive). If you think about driving T5's to their specs, it would be cheaper (less electricity and bulbs do not have to be replaced as often)... would it still achieve the results you want?

Not a T5 vs MH expert here. I've seen a few threads of people using overdriven t5's with PAR values about the same as MH if not slightly better. Their wattage usage was about the same as MH. But I have not run across one with normal outputs.

I know i would like to have the MH but don't really want to spend 1600+ with all of the new technology possibly coming down the pipe just hoping to stop the bleeding with a brand new system, and have not ran any t5 lighting personally

I would say you will spend more to go with a T-5 setup. Lets face it 500 watts from t-5's are the same 500 watts from halides so no energy savings really are to be had. If you run an 8 bulb t-5 setup at 54W a bulb you are using 432w of electricity. The same heat is produced with those t-5 as with 2 250 watt halides. If you choose to overdrive your T-5's to 80W your looking at 640W. The energy savings and heat reduction with t-5's is not really there.
What makes T-5's so great is the colors you can get out of them, and of course great par and light coverage as well. Par wise if you compare most 6-8 bulb T-5's to 250W halides you wont see much difference, depending on bulbs used and placement of course. Now If we start talking 400 Watt halides thats a bit different but lets stay with 250 halides as a base model since they are the most widely used. Most of the newer (and big $) T-5 fixtures have every bit as much par as the halides would and if they are overdriven they can have more par. The lower end fixtures have decent par but have a lot of flaws, and for the money I would pick halides for sure over these. The T-5's claim to fame is the light is spread the entire length of the tank and that they really make corals pop, there is no getting around that, much better than any halides ( yes even Radiums) but it can take a lot of trial and error finding that perfect mix that you really like. But once you find that mix WOW!!! I researched the heck out of T-5's for quite awhile before deciding on lights and guess what, I chose halides as my main light source. Two reasons, one was initial cost. To buy a 6-8 bulb fixture of good quality was going to be a lot of money, not to mention the money spent buying different bulbs in search of that "perfect" look. The second reason was that for all that money spent am I really getting that much more for my tank? I decided the answer was no, especially when I got my halide fixture used for a VERY good price. I do have two 54W T-5's in it for actinic though.
All that being said for your 14" tall tank you could easily run T-5's and have SPS corals no problem, providing you buy the right reflectors, ballasts, ect. A 6 bulb setup will be good for an 18" front to back tank, and an 8 bulb would be good for a 24" tank. Sorry if I rambled or seem like a know it all but I hope I could help you decide.

I currently have a nice MH set up on the 180. I am in the process of switching to 7 60W T5s with Ice Caps to Over drive them. By far, MH is cheaper to set up. Not to mention the bulb replacement. It just depends on what you like. I have seen some 180 tanks and fell in love with the colors. Everything just pops if you get it right.

My set up may be done this Sunday and I will post pics.

I've run both, and honestly had much better luck with MH for SPS. LPS were more forgiving, but bleaching is still very common. Bulbs have come a long way in just the last couple of years since I ran them. I would highly recommend NOT overdriving the T5's on a 14" tall tank. You'll probably run into even more bleaching issues than normal.

I'm partial to MH still.
