I frequently fly to several different cities with MUCH better livestock than I have at home. Does anyone know how to take coral with you on a plane? Any airline better than another?
Well you wont be able to carry it with you as its liquid. You can check it but make sure to add a lot of heat packs I imagine it would get really cold in the luggage storage.
I am in the same situation here... What i have done is purchased some small tubaware container think they are 6 oz. You can take 3 of them with 3 oz of water in them on the plane. Just make sure u take them out so they know about the liquid at the security check. The problem is you can only fit frags in there.
Your other option is just before going into the airport take your coral out of water wrap it in a wet paper towel and put it i a ziploc bag. That kinda simulates a low tide... Not sure how long it would last though... That technique was give to me by Eric Borneman so even thou it sounds crazy it works.
I was let through security with my corals as a carry on. I recently moved from Memphis to Orlando and was transferring some of my favorite corals from the old tank in Memphis to the new one in Orlando and there was not a problem with security. I just explained the situation to the TSA agent and he said no problem since there was a live animal in the liquid it wouldnt be a problem. I would still call ahead just to be sure. I have not had good experiences with packing corals in a cooler and sending them with the stowed luggage. They do not exactly handle the baggage or in this case a cooler with any care. Hope it works out for you.
