taking off kit lense for storage

Is it ok to keep the kit lens on the camera when its in the carrying case? I have a Nikon D40 with the kit lens. When I bought the extended warranty I received a free nikon case, and it looks like they designed it so that you could keep the lens on. Is this ok? I would almost think more harm could come from constantly taking the lense on and off.

Thanks,
Dale

All DSLRs are susceptible to sensor dust. Unless you need to take the lens off (to change lenses) it's in your best interest to leave it on at all times.

Thats great news, I was worried about putting the lens on and off too much. Not for the dust thing, since I was not aware of that, but because it seems like it people would become lax when messing with the lens too much.

Not sure what the manual says, but you also have to take the camera in for sensor cleaning, I think it's yearly or as needed.

Ritz offered an extended warrantee for the D40 that includes the sensor cleaning which alone costs about 60 bucks. I don't remember what the warrantee cost is with Ritz.

Cleaning the sensor yourself isn't hard or terribly risky. I have a hard time paying someone $60-80 for something that I can do at home in about 5 minutes.

I have not cleaned a sensor, but based on Beerguys assessment, I will probably do it myself as well.
