Taking Pictures and Back Lighting

With modern DSLRs do you folks pay much attention to your backlighting, or the general room light levels, when taking pictures? My tank room is a decent size but the ceiling fixture hasn't worked for quite some time. Since the tank lights the room, I never bothered replacing it.

I'm wondering if the lack of ambient light in the room hurts my picture taking and videos?

I usually turn all non-tank lighting off when I'm taking pictures or video. Only causes reflections and does not contribute anywhere near substantially to lighting the subject in comparison to the tank lights.

A tripod, processing software, and a good eye are your best friends.

Good Luck!

When taking tank pics, the darker the room, the better. Windows, lights on in the room or adjacent rooms, TV, any light source, will cause a reflection on the glass.

Agreed with Reefers Digest. Turn off all lights except for the tank lights. It is not going to provide any light to your camera's sensor, just cause glare and reflections.

Wear a dark colored shirt, too. I have noticed my reflection later in tank pics when wearing a white shirt.
