Taking pictures

So I splurged and bought a cannon rebel eos t3i and have been trying to get some good pictures of my tank but it just turns out super bright blue anyone have any tips?

Two things, first can your camera adjust for Kelvin temperatures of 15K or above? If not, try adjusting the white balance.

Adjust your white balance to shade! It will warm up your photo and counter act the blue. Also make sure your watching the light meter so to see if it is over exposed. It should be on zero but the t3i tends to over expose so maybe a 1/3 of a stop underexposed.

filters

There's a thread talking about orange filters and a guy selling them very cheap.. they come in different levels of filter and cut the blue down dramatically, I used them and they work well. They just look like orange rectangles of thin plastic.

also, shoot in RAW format. It'll give you lots of wiggle room to adjust the white balance - providing you have photo editing software.

Speaking of photo editing software, can anyone recommend a good one for beginners. I purposefully bought a camera with RAW shooting abilities just so I can get into post editing, but have been intimidated to start.

Sorry OP, don't mean to hi-jack but maybe this can help you too.

Light room is really good for beginners its just a mater moving sliders! I use it for batch editing for clients when I have thousands of photos. But its pretty simple!

Yep, I love LR, too. Lot's of tutorials online/Youtube for it as well.
Yeah I use Photoshop for any kind of complicated retouching or compositing but 100% light room when I have to much stuff to go through in Photoshop and I can skim down the batch to the photos I really like!
