Taking the Plunge

I'm waiting on the color. I forgot all about anything like that, actually... I'm knee-deep in finals and a major natural disaster occurred this weekend. We're still under a state of emergency. Been staying with my mother for three days now.

We suffered a major ice storm Thursday night into Friday. Lost power Thursday night and haven't gotten it 100% returned yet. We're scheduled to have our power back on with no more interruptions Wednesday. I came back to get the reef survivors on Saturday morning. The Anthias and Chromis were already dead. The apartment was 50F and the water was 55F. On Sunday, the apartment was 39F.

I lost almost all of my livestock.

The total losses I have now are:

all of my SPS:
Orange birdsnest w/purple polyps and green tips
ORA Green birdsnest,
Superman,
two large Orange Montis,
Scribbs Acro,
green/purple Milli,
Largeish Purple Digi
Smaller purple Digi
The frags of the Digi)
My large Scoly looks like it is on its way out
the Favia looks rough

Fish-wise:
pair of Dispar Anthias
Chromis
Full-size Banded Sleeper Goby.
Various snails and hermits
Cleaner Shrimp
Cleaner Shrimp "Fry"

My survivors are:
All of my Zoas?
BamBam's,
Bright Red ones,
Dragon Eye,
Green-skirted,
peach)
Frogspawn
Hammer
Branching Frogspawn
Duncans
Maybe the leather? It looks pretty ****ed off right now

Pair of ORA Ocellaris
Potter's Angelfish

The LPS are looking sick, especially the Favia, Scoly and Duncans. I'm not holding my breath on them surviving.

I'm bringing what I have left to a fellow reefer with a generator to hold on to until I can get my tank in working order.

Oh no. I'm sorry to hear this has happened.

I hope you can pull through with what is left... At least you've got your Potter's... I know the pain of ice storms - yet never with a reef tank.

Best of luck to you.

Very sorry to hear about your power situation, as well as all those losses. It dropped 50 degrees from yesterday to today, and everyone in the area is complaining about how cold it is. I mean, yesterday we could have worn shorts and flip-flops, it was way warm here, and then BAM! arctic blast. I wonder if it came from your neck of the woods.

I have been following this thread for some time now, even though I havent posted on it. I didnt have much to add, but kept an eye on it with much interest. I just want to say now that i am heartbroken for you. I have lost tanks with much less than you just lost, and was simply crushed by it... My heart goes out to you and all the fellow reefers that got caught up in the cold snap this week... I droped out of the hobby after my last crash, and it took almost 3 years or so to muster up the will to start over again... From what i have seen of your setup, I sure hope you dont do somthing similar.
For what its worth, I send my prayers to all the folks affected by the ice storm, and all the animals in thier care...

Jeff

What is with all the disasters!?!? Did the Clubhouse do something to offend the reef gods?

We had very little heat in our apartment over the weekend but we didn't lose power so the heaters kept up with the cold. The apartment never got below 15C/59F.

Thanks for all of the support, everyone.

Unfortuntely, I came home from work today to find my Potter's dead. :( He was my favorite fish, always defying the odds. He was a model citizen, fat piggy and excellent eater. Of all of the things in my tank I was worried about losing, this fish was it. Next in line is my Crocea.

I brought my last survivors to a fellow reefer's house today after work. I hope what is left lives and that what doesn't, doesn't hurt anything in his tank.

aww man... that's terrible... I lost Merlin a while back, but never posted it. He didn't make it 24hrs in his new home. It sucks losing your favorite fish. :(

Yeah Schmeejay, sucks big time. The Potter's was an instant favorite with everyone. My mother watched him zip around the tub for the past two days and was shocked that he passed, too.

I'm sorry that you lost Merlin. Looks like my birthday money will be spent restoring the reef. Won't be for a week or two, though. Until finals are over and I can recook the LR.

This absolutely sucks arse. Just before Happy Chrimbo too.

What is it with power cuts in the US?
Do they not have backups or what?

I cannot remember the last time I had an outage here in Ireland.
Probably back in the 80's IIRC. Mind you it;'s rare we have cold snaps like that, but we do get storms fairly frequently.

I would be mightily pee'd off to be honest. Maybe ask Santy for a UPS this Chrimbo, rather than Gucci shoes or whatever.

Poxy global warming. Sorry Schwe & everyone else who lost stuff.

Hey guys... did I mention I CHOPPED my hair off today? :o

I DID! I had about 11" cut off, donating it to Locks of Love. :) This is the shortest I've had it in a LONG time, if not ever. Pete almost had a MI when I walked in the door. He says I look 30 now.

My hairdresser wants to dye my hair a darker color. "burgundy" I've NEVER colored my hair before,,, ever! Not even that sun-in spray stuff!

RAE! HELP! Do I do it?

No product in my hair in this pic:

Sorry for the delayed response......Your hair is GREAT!

PS, I have no idea how to use those things, my hair is naturally like that, HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAAAAA .

OMG, just finishe reading the thread updates............UG! I am so sorry for your loss. When our power was out, it was Sept. so no one was cold in my tank. I hate that for you babe!

Very sorry to hear about your tank.
It really sucks when months if not years of effort are lost in only one day and sometimes less....
Hope whatever you have left alive in the tank will recover.

My heart goes out to you. It really sucks when you lose a fish that you've become attached to, but to lose as much as you have along with the stress of final exams must just be unbelievable. I finished my finals on friday and am just waiting for the results to be posted so I know the stress that created for me. Good luck with the rest of your up coming exams.

Yeah, this past week was pretty unbearable.

I'm feeling re-energized with the tank and am already "shopping" for how I'm going to restock the fish.

I am at a bit of a loss as to how to get the water clean. I pumped out all but the last 4" of it, and it's downright septic. Does anyone have suggestions? I'm thinking to just refill it and let the skimmer do its job on the water for a week or so, and perform several water changes. Should I remove the sand and rinse it? I pointed the powerheads down at the sand while I was siphoning out water in effort to try to remove as many dead bristle worms, baby bristle stars medusa worms and other small "bugs" as possible.

As far as fish...

My lone survivors, the ORA Ocellaris pair
Kole Tang
Firefish pair
Sixline Wrasse
Pajama Cardinals (2? 3?)
sand-sifting Goby- Another diamond? smaller Orange Stripe Prawn Goby?
Another Potter's Angelfish? Flame Angel? (If I can find a male and female, I'd like to have a pair)
Neon cleaner Goby

I would wash out the sand (using the Sand Rinsing article on my site for guidelines) and start fresh. No reason to keep all that waste in the tank since you're essentially having to re-start.

If you keep the LR submerged, it won't cycle. And once the sand is replaced in the system, and saltwater is in the tank, move the rock over. I doubt you'll get a cycle, but stock very lightly for the next 45 days, and test the water frequently.

Yeah... but how would you go about rinsing out 160lbs+ of sand in the middle of winter with a foot of snow outside? :D

Lots of buckets?

I don't want to clog up the plumbing with any more sand than I've already washed down the drain in the tub. :o

Well, you could do the washing in a shower or bathtub, running the garden hose from the washing machine connection.

You probably need a strainer on the drain though to avoid sand building up in the U-trap.

When I wash sand, I use the hose full strength, and swirl the sand around and around, then pour off the surface water and detritus that has collected at the top of the sand, which allows the sand to stay in the bucket. After a few times, you'll figure out how to do just that.
