Ok i want some honest opinions and experiences here, iam on the fence .. should i buy this fish or not. talk me into it or talk me out of it

I know where i can get a ~10 inch sohal tang, i dont know at this point if it is "fresh" from the ocean or if it is a trade in

tank is a 7ft x 2 ft x 2ft fowlr and tank mates would be queen angel, asfur angel, clown trigger, niger trigger

iam i crazy for concidering it?
sould i get it?
should i run from it?

i have enailed the owner /seller inquiring about its disposition and history but i dont know if the reply will push me one way or another so please post your thoughts and dont sugar coat them

On 1 hand it's a really beautiful fish, on the other it may be too much in that tank...DAMN, how'd I get up here on the fence with you! :jester:

I feel like its a big fish for that tank, and you already have some good size ones in there.

actually i dont even have water in the tank that is just fish from other tanks i would consider moving to this tank as i dont want to just have one fish in a tank..even though i know it is a good chance of that happening with any of the fish listed in this thread

currently the asfur, clown trigger and redtooth are in a 6x2x2.5 tank at this time and the queen angel is still in some vendors tank somewhere or still swimmin free in the ocean

ill be moving in feb/mar 2010 and the way i will have to move the 3 big tanks out of the house is the 7ft will have to move 1st and thats why i mentioned the fish in the 6x2 as potential tank mates as an easy of moving with only one move..ie transfer contents of one tank to the other then start the process of stocking the now "new" empty tank

i still think that tank is too small for a sohal, and I would be really wary of a queen angel in there, they need huge amounts of space to be happy.

Remember, theres a difference between survive and thrive, and we should all aim for the latter.

I agree with the survive vs thrive thats why iam on here asking questions because i want to do whats right for the fish in the long run.. i would say iam planning on a 1000g upgrade which i am but sofar the checkbook and the wife are not agreeing with me on the upgrade so since the upgrade is not fully paid for in advance i cant count on it happening and cant make stocking plans hoping it will happen.. the queen angel is the wifes MUST HAVE fish so maybe i need to start a queen angel thread so i can get her to agree to the 1000g upgrade (after i find the cash to pay for it or start working on her when i got 75% of the cash on hand)

Good thought on not stocking with the intention of upgrading. It almost never happens the way people think it will or within the time frame that they think it will. I would say your probably ok with the 2 triggers and the asfur, but then I would fill ti out with a handful of smaller fish, maybe even one or two of the smaller tangs (sohals just get so big). There are some beautiful wrasses and such that would do wonderfully in that tank and not have such an impact on space or bioload.

well replys have been on the fence and against..anybody want to put in a post for getting the sohal... iam slidding off the fence here against getting it but iam still reaching for the top of the fence to get back on it...

anybody got a 1000+++g tank they want to donate to the cause LOL

A clown tang also won't work. Nobody is going to post for getting the sohal or clown tangs because your tank is just not suitable for one in the long run

well being a fair individal i had to give the oposition thier fair chance to respond

personally i had concerns about the size of my tank for this particular fish and i donot know anybody personaly who has experience with a sohal except for the lfs.

i guess i could convert the nieghbors swimming pool into a saltwater tank but iam sure he wont go for it nor could i afford to heat it in the winter time in oklahoma

oh well i guess ill wait on a sohal tang until i win the lottery or save the cash for a 1000+++g tank

What is the problems with clown tangs?

they get to be fairly large (albeit not as large as some), they are extremely aggressive, and they cover vast amounts of space quickly and regularly. Some tangs, like PBT tend to farm a particular area of a reef in the wild, therefore being able to adapt better to the home aquarium, whereas clown tangs tend to roam vast areas, bullying out other fish for the rights to specific areas, and then moving on. Further adding to their unsuitability for the home aquarium is their dismal survival rate. There is an extremely small percentage that are still alive a year or two after being imported and even fewer that are alive after five. I have seen a pair in a 20,000g reef, and they are aggressive in there even against fish as big as full grown vlamingii's and dusemieri's.

I had an 8.5" long, thick as a hamburger Sohal Tang in a 155 cube shaped tank. He was happy, but I wasnt. I wasnt because he splashed water on my floor and I wasnt going to cover my tank because I was in it too much for the bother of covers.

I was, however, happy that the lady I gave him to had a 240g long tank for him otherwise I wouldnt have let her have it. I wouldnt have let him go to anyone with less than a 200 even though he was happy in my 155. He didnt really have any other fish to have to fight for space with.....just a maroon clown and a chain link eel.......I guess thi sis why he was so happy.

I got him when he was a nugget....he grew into a beautiful, fat fish.....I just hated it that he thought the water belonged more on the outside of the tank on everyone else than he did in there with him

Oh, I wouldnt even suggest you not getting one, but I wouldnt tell you TO get one either....Just sharing my experience with one. I loved his look but hated his persistent water splashing......He wasnt aggressive, but then what do I know? He didnt have anything in there with him to challenge him.....His challengers were on the outside of the tank...lol....but thats another story
