Talk to me About Wrasses

Reef safe wrasses..what should I know before getting one? I've only ever owned a Six Line.

Much nicer (and I mean temperment) wrasses out there than a 6 line!

What do you mean by reef safe, coral safe or do you want coral and invert safe? What size tank?

Mystery wrasses are really nice, as well as the fairy wrasses (which are invert safe)

I've got a few wrasses in my tank that they say aren't "reef safe" since they'll eat inverts, but OK for corals: snooty maori (Cheilinus oxycephalus, really cool in that he changes color with his mood on a dime from red, white, green reminds me of an octopus in those nature programs!) and a yellow corris. I also have a harlequin tusk.

just make sure your tank is covered, and if you still have the 6 line i wouldnt add any other wrasse's as the 6 line is probably the meanest wrasse out there when it comes to being housed with other wrasse's

+1 on covered, fairy wrasses and a lot of wrasses in general are jumpers and carpet surfers.

NYreefnoob, what's the wrasse in your avatar?

Primarily just corals, but I also have some hermits, snails, and a cleaner shrimp (big).

A lot of wrasses would be OK with that line-up except for the snails :). Some of the bigger carnivore ones may go after the hermits too, but I haven't had any trouble with my cleaner shrimp (yet).

I don't have the 6 line anymore. My snails are Astreas so they are cheap and replaceable. Would they totally wipe out my snails or may I just lose a couple?

My tank has a canopy with egg crate over it except for a few inches in the front for feeding access.

tcoral thats my super male flame wrasse,

forddna what other fish are in the tank ? fairy and flashers are pretty easy to keep, there are alot of them to choose from, they dont bother corals and most are pretty docile

I have several tangs, and they just beat the crap out of the little powder brown that I added (eventually died :(), two percs, falco hawk, watchman goby.

Tangs are:

Purple (the one who was the worst problem with the PBrT)
Yellow
Regal
Sailfin
Chevron

I only have the one 6 line n he's a ok with my other fish. Course he's smaller. But he's fun to watch darting in n outta holes in the rock. Plus he's vivid under led lights the blue around the eyes glow.

I have had yellow coris wrasse with no problems other than they like to jump. They are cool and I like the fact that they are active swimmers.

the purple, yellow, sail fin and powder are all zebramosas. at this point it will be tough to add any more from this family, 6 line wrasse have always turned into prcks in my tanks, carpenter wrasse are great in pairs M/F
