tang ate zoa

I had a colony of zoa that suffered a tank crash that I purchased from a fellow reefer. Lacking the immediate room, I placed them in my fuge. Well, I think the amphipods ate many of them since it now looks like a bunch od hollow tubes. I moved it to the display since my angels will eat the pods. The following day I found my sailfin tang swallowing a piece. A few minutes late it bit off another one and swallowed that one. Is it going to be okay? Will it eat live zoa or should I assume that it is cleaning out the hollow tubes?

Sailfins can be notorious coral munchers, as can many fish if they are just of the disposition to do so or dont get fed enough.

I came up the 6 hp shov vac method of bad fish erradication once due to a bad sailfin. Had just reaquascaped the tank and wasnt about to break it down for t his murderer. Trapped him where he slept iwth a couple [pieces of acrylci and THWUMP. didnt hurt him besides some scratches.

The tang hasn't touched my other corals. Not even the other damaged ones that I moved in so I am going to hope is was just a dead flesh type thing. Not a skinny bone on him. Today almost everythign but a few healthy zoa are gone. It must have had over a hundred on it. :(

I have heard of blue tangs eating zoas more than once, but never a Zebrasoma tang.

People go bad......and apparently tangs do too. Never had any of my tangs eat anything they shouldn't. Interesting experience. Hope the colony recovers.

I thought I was seeing things when I caught a Lawnmower blenny munching on some of my zoas until I had a friend over & we both watched it rip off a matfull of them & wisk them away! That guy took over a week to catch...

I really like my sailfin. He's about the size of my hand and still growing. I'll keep my eye on him. I really hope that he doesn't start eatting healthy zoa! No one has mentioned the toxins and he looks okay, so I'm going to assume that it wasn't toxic to him.

I've had a couple different Purple Tangs eat zoanthids and a couple Hippo Tangs do the same.
Once they see that they can eat them with no harm to themselves, they will go back till the colony is gone and then move on to the next.
