Tang compatibility and other quest

Right now I have a purple tang in my 125 reef. was checking out the HWN buy.....


Would any of you guys recommend if the tangs below could cohabitat in the 125:

chevron, achilles, kole......

are these guys better together as a threesome without the purple......or would a couple of these also be ok with the tang. please specify your input.

other livestock in reef tank:
velvet and leopard wrasse
mandarin, scooter, bicolor blenny
bimac hawkfish.

also, as a separate tank, has anyonme ever tried the Leaf Fish (Black) 1 17 singularly or in small groups? do they just become too dull to watch? any advice here on care, etc?

The Purple Tang could be a monster if he has established himself in the tank.
You could probally get away with the Kole. The achilles is an ick magnet. IMHO it is the one of the hardiest tangs to keep going for any length of time ,they need a lot of swimming room and stress real quick. The chevron is a tang that is too expensive and gets plain ugly as it gets older.

I do not think that any of them will bother your other livestock

I do not no if you are part of the hawaii buy but they have orange shoulder tangs . They are a great looking tang that is very well behaved

You can word the question any way you like, and as many times as you like, but what it comes down to is that a 125 is a borer line environment for a single Tang, multiple Tangs are not likely to coexist peacefully there.
A Kole is the best choice, as they can be comfortable in an even smaller tank.
An established purple Tang is not likely to accept ANY new fish, most certainly not another Tang, especially a Tang with a similar body shape to his own.

I totally agree with Larry and Andy, a 125 IMO is too small for multiple tangs especially for cheverons and achilles which can be difficult to aclimate.... and even harder with an established purple.

The kole and chevron have a mouth more adapted to scraping algae vs. picking, so they would be a good choice. You may need to have an acclimating box within the tank so the purple gets used to his new tank mates. I would stay away from the achilles.

Standard 120 is 4 X 2 X 2 your tank is a 125
The extra 2 feet does make a difference. Keeping more than one Tang in that tank is not advisable though. I am not going to tell you that you aren't "successful" with your who knows how many Tangs. What I will say is that even if you don't see it, chances are that there are some serious aggression issues. Each and every fish is different, but certain things can be expected from certian species.

There are people that have spent their lives studying marine animals that know a lot more about this stuff than I ever hope to. I respect their knowledge, and in this case specifically, I refer you to Scott Michael.

I have 6 tangs and they all coexist happily. 2 of them being the most aggressive, a sohal and a clown. The extent of aggression is a one shot chase across the front of the tank. I attribute my "success" with having so many

On a different note we almost didnt get back from the LI Sound today. Zipped to Oyster Bay this morning then stopped at Mattinicock on the way back to Hempstead Harbor and then blew the power pack for half the motor. Sucker wouldnt go above 1500 RPM Was waiting to dial 1-800-4-sea-tow LOL Longggg ride home! Caught a few shorties while in Oyster Bay.

This is an issue that you and I will probably never agree on. Even if I witnessed "success" in your tank, I could never recommend anyone trying to duplicate it.

I have a Hawaiian Golden Bristletooth Tang in my 58 reef and have had no problems. Tangs hve personalities and if you are good to them they can be good to you (doesnt mean they wont). It is a crapshoot, but tangs do need sufficient room to move around in. The great tang debate lives on!!!
