tang compatibility

How complicated can it be to add a tang when you already have one in the tank? My dealer has a 200 g tank and has about 6 different tangs. I have a 100g tank with a yellow tang, and I would like to add a powder blue tang, but not sure if it is safe to do so.

What else is in the tank with the yellow? Powders can be agressive towards other tangs. I dont think I would risk it unless you the tank were larger.

100 gal is a little small for a powder blue IMHO, but if it's a pretty open tank you might be able to get away with it. How big is the PB? How big is the yellow tang and how long has he been there?

Besides the tank probably being too small for the PBT, the order you are putting the tangs in is probably the right way. PBT's are generally pretty aggressive and best put in last. You may have to change the aquascaping if there is too much aggression in that small of a tank.

the best idea would have been to add the yellow tang last since it tends to be more agressive towards other tangs.
I have 4 tangs in my 110gal--introduced in this order
yellow, regal, sailfin, power blue last.
In each case the yellow chased after each addition for about three days and then was fine with them. Every once and awhile it gives the powder blue a shot or a chase.

ok, think I'll pass on the powder blue then. My yellow tang is not really aggresive, he get's along fine with a copperband butterfly. I don't have many fish aside from the yellow tang, only a copper band butterfly and a blue damsel. The blue damsel is extremely well behaved, by the way. If I could place the yellow tang in the fuge for a couple of days, could I get away with another tang, say a hippo tang? Or is 100g good for one tang only? The yellow tang eats a big chunk of the algae, but leaves some which I would like to try another tang on.

If you consider the hippo tang you will be in the same situation as I will be in shortly ---having to find another home for it or upgrade your tank.

ok, thanks. Think I'll stick to 1 tang only then. All of the other small tangs are more agresive, aren't they?

The Kole Tang (Ctenochaetus strigosus) is very docile, and would do fine in a 100 gallon tank. I would recommend that if you want another tang. He might get pushed around by the yellow tang however, so you'll want to keep an eye on that.

Also the Tomini or Flame Fin tang is another awesome bristle tooth tang that would be fine with a yellow

I have a Kole Tang, a Sailfin Tang, Yellow Tang and Purple Tang all in a 150. Everyonce in a while the Sailfin or Purple will try to start something but no major problems.

Just my two cents. My PBT is a bully and will kill any new fish that I put in the tank no matter what kind. Don't get one unless its the last fish you are getting!
