I'm at my lfs and this tomini tang caught my eye. But he's swimming back in forth in a small spot and has a big spot on his lower belly. Need help to see in he's okay to buy. He seems so be eating.

Can't tell from the picture because it too pixilated. Rule of thumb is never get a fish from a LFS with any spots on it or if the fish isn't eating/ acting normal

I would resist unless he came at a big discount and you had a hospital tank ready. The advantage of buying at a LFS is you can spot things like this and avoid the fish.

Swimming back and forth in one spot is not good and not normal.
Black spots that are not part of the normal markings are not good.
Tangs can stress easily and become sick fast. If you like him lots ask to hold for 1 week and see what he looks like in a week....

Swimming back in forth in one spot, typically along the glass is "normal" behavior for a fish that is stressed and will often exhibit when introduced to new surroundings. I have had several of my fish do this when first introduced to the tank. It has always slowed down and stopped after a week or so.

My experience is sick fish tend to just stay in one spot.

I agree but the fish is at the LFS and we do not know how long he has been in the tank and what else is is the tank. IMO, I wouldn't buy him unless he's moving up and down the full length of the tank, eats, and continues to do this for at least 7 days.

Your right, sick fish stay in one spot, stressed fish can pace, stress leads to immune deficiencies, leads to sickness...etc

Okay thanks everyone for your responses. I've decided I wait to see if another comes around
