Tang HELP PLEASE

I recently acquired a Kole Tang through Liveaquaria. He has been in my 10 gallon QT for a week now and has been scared and jittery the whole time. He has yet to eat, but has no signs of ich or other problems. Until today when I was going to move him to my DT. I noticed on his mouth a white fleshy like protrusion and have no idea what it is. Any ideas? Thanks (from a rookie)

Look at his mouth... I know its hard to see

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. It looks like a bacterial or fungal infection to me. Probably not going to infect the fish in the DT, but I'm sure the medications are not reef safe so it's a good thing you have him in QT.

Good luck, that is a really great fish!

I doubt its lymphocystis, its just too symmetrical and only on the lips. Really hard to tell, I'd call LA for some advice. They are active on this site and have the best customer service, in any business I know of. IMO & IME. They may even extend the warranty, if they know one of their fish is in trouble..

Could be something bacterial. Hard to say. If I were you, I wouldn't move him into your DT for at least another couple of months after this clears up. You don't want all of your fish in there swimming around with mouth herpes. ;)

Soak his food in Selcon or the like: a general tonic, vitamins, etc. I've seen fish that responded favorably to this stuff even though pretty serious HLLE cases.

Lips need chapstick!

Lips need chapstick!

I ave seen this on other fish from rubbing their mouths back and forth against the bag that they were shipped in during accimation at some of the live fish stores in my erea. They are just sore from rubbing against the glass . What size is the hospital tank? I would move him to a larger tank or the display. I think this is how some fish handle the shipping in such a small bag....:crazy1:
