Tang ID

I agree that it didnt match anything in their lists at wwm, but there are certainly species variations. I still feel it could be an Acanthurus species, but I'm inclined to think Ctenochaetus more so.

The body is to long to be in that family. I have fish in that family and they do not have a long body like this. They are much shorter and rounder shape. I looks closer to a gold rim ting but with different color variations.

I believe it is a Ctenochaetus binotatus, which is in the bristletooth family. From WWM:

"One of six genera of acanthurids, Ctenochaetus comprises nine of the seventy-five or so described species of Surgeonfishes. Specialized mouths and teeth (cteno-chaetus means "comb bristle" define the genus’ members. Unlike other surgeons that have rigid, attached dentition, Ctenochaetus have movable, individual, bristle-like teeth. Coupled with a protrusible, outreaching mouth, these fishes use this unusual feeding device to sort and remove interstitial fauna, scrape soft algae, and "detritus" of nutritive value from rock and substrate. "

This does not look like any of the Acanthurus genus: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/acanthurtngs.htm

I wouldn't characterize a Kole Tang as a round fish--rather, I would describe it as a long fish. This fish has a body shape and mouth that is very similar to a Kole Tang, the only difference being the coloration.

I think this fish looks very similar to, except I do note a difference in the tail--the fish above seems to have a forked tail, while the binotatus seems to have a triangular tail:

Oh boy Oh boy! I get to give an opinion in a Tang debate!

I don't believe it is a Gold Rim Tang, but I think the body shape is very similar. I haven't a clue as to which family or species of tang that comes from.

not a surgeon fish, they don't look like that, closer to a doctor fish....but still different

uh, isnt "Surgeon fish" a generic name for any tang?

I'm sure that tang is a hybrid of two other tangs. A lot of hybrids going around these days. That's why there's no pic or id of your tang, maybe pretty rare since it's a hybrid (there may be no other like it)

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I'll send a pic to wwm tonight.

I took a video so you could get a better idea of body. He/she flares his/her fins in the video.

based on the video I'm even more convinced it could be an acanthurus. look forward to hearing what the wwm crew has to say.

I got a reply back from WWM today and Bob Fenner couldn't identify the fish. Hopefully another member of the crew can. I'm going to call the store today to see which wholesaler and subsequently which part of the world the tang came from.

New pic that is a little bit more clear
