Tang in 40G Breeder?

I wouldn't put a tang in a 40 gallon tank. If you are going to upgrade, wait until that time comes and then get the tang.

If it is one of the slow growing ones, perhaps six months. However that size tank is really pushing it for even a small juvi tang.

Yeah I was thinking that too. I've seen some tangs in even smaller tanks, but I highly doubt they were happy.

Okay, thanks for the advice.:) I'm having a really difficult time picking out the fish I desire to get.

Well, what kind of fish are you interested in? Is your tank covered?
I'm upgrading to a 40G breeder in about 3 weeks when I get back from vacation. It will be a mixed reef, mostly with LPS, lit by a Nova Extreme Pro.
Generally, I'm looking for fish that have bright colours, and won't outgrow my tank any shorter than within two years.
Also, since I'm upgrading, I'll be buying around 40-50 more lbs. of LR. I was just wondering how you go about introducing new rock? Should I set-up another tank for a few weeks for it to settle in? I really dont want to deal with any ich or other diseases/hitchhikers seeded in the rock, in my display.Thanks.

if your introducing new rock to your tank, then yes put it in a rubbermaid container, or another tank if you have one, with a power head and heater. let it cycle for about a month and then you can introduce it.

what kind of hitchhikers are you worried about? isopods? glass anemones? those are easy to get rid of but try to find rock that doesnt have these things.
the whole disease thing, well i would just cycle the water in hypo salinity (SG- 1.009), this should do away with anything in the rock.

oh and no dont put a tang in the 40, they need at least 4 feet of room to swim, plus its harder to control ph,temp, and salinity when you have such a small tank, all of which will stress the tang (they are finicky when it comes to those things) they will easily get ich if you dont have a stable system.

Just cycle the rock somewhere where you won't mind the smell - I do it outside during the nice months. The high ammonia levels are ususally enough to kill most of the pests on the rock.

If you put a top on your tanks, there are numerous flasher wrasses that will fit your criterion for fish.

I subscribe to jda's opinion. I LOVE flasher wrasses but all my tanks are covered. They will jump and egg crate will NOT keep them in.

I havn't seen any flashers at my LFS yet. I heard they could get rather expensive, however I may look forward into it.
