Tang Temperment

I have several years experience worth of keeping surgeonfish. I have a 125gal tank (6ft), and am looking for a new tang resident.

I previously had a Powder Blue Tang, and whatever tang keeping experience and common sense I had was overruled by his shear beauty. I have had him for three years, after which time he became a shear terror to the other inhabitants. People said they are terrors, and those people are right.

Don't get me wrong. He is very large (5-6"), very wide, and has not a spot of Ich on him. I do have a very succesful, copper-free 10wk quarentine program that he went through 3 years ago. He eats a lot.

The tank is not heavily stocked. There is a 4" Majestic Angel, a few Lyretail anthias, and a pair of clowfish.

But the nature of the tank is quite peaceful, and he is the odd one out with his temper.

The situation has become critical, and he most go.

I have an extra system running where he'll go until he can find a good home. He is blind in one eye (always has been). He has the eye, after a year or so I discovered that he is just blind on one side.

Anyhow, I would like to try for another surgeonfish. I feel I can keep species such as the Powder Blue alive and healthy, and I have a mostly empty 6ft tank.

This time, though, I am looking for more peaceful species. Does anyone know about the temperment of the following:
  • Acanthurus pyroferus
  • Acanthurus tristis
  • Acanthurus tennentii
Thank you in advance, and no more being seduced by the beauty of some of the Acanthurus spp.

The lieutenant would be my choice. My favorite fish in my tank is my orange shoulder. Who is a lot like a lieutenant. Though the chocolate and the mimic are nice choices also. If you kept a PBT pretty happy you shouldn't have much of a problem with any of those three choices.

That's good news to hear. And as for their temperment? Are they pretty peaceful? I learned (as always, after the fact) the need to keep a peaceful reef tank peaceful.

Yes, I kept a PBT very happy and healthy. He eats extremely well, and is very fat. Well, I don't know if he is overweight, but he has the healthy width you'd expect of an Acanthurus.

I've gotten very good at caring for Acanthurus tangs, and have taken some from local club members and nurtured them back to health in my hosital system.

Why not a powder brown or a convict (I like your other choices too) just giving you a couple of tangs I personally like.

But sounds good either way you go.

FWIW my pyroferus is still in juvi colors for the 1-1/2 years I've had him so I can't give any info on their adult habits. I really enjoy this fish and he seems to have a very peacefull nature about him. I'm looking forward to seeing him change to his adult phase and has recently started to show signs of doing so.

Given the average size of the pyroferus it is well suited to your tank. Not that I'm biased or anything but this would be my choice.

Much more peaceful than the majority of Powder Blues.
