I have a 55 gallon tank with and CPR 20 gallon AquaFugeâ„¢ PRO refugium and I was wondering if my tank could support a tang/tangs of any kind. I have seen many articles and videos arguing on this subject and i cannot find a straight answer. Videos on youtube show happy tangs in 55 gallon tanks and the owners of the tank always seem to say their tangs are happy and healthy.
Tank Specs:
-55 gallon main tank
-70 lbs live rock
-55 lbs live sand
-20 gallon AquaFugeâ„¢ PRO refugium
-4 fish

I agree, I have a 60cube, with 29g custom sump/fuge and around 70lbs live rock. Running an asm g1 skimmer. Ive yet to be able to keep a tang for more than a few weeks. Its a real bumber

agree with the others. you need at least a 90g 4' tank to properly house a tang. lots of other great fish out there that will do much better in a tank your size!

Small/Juvi tangs will be ok for a year or two... but you'll really need to be serious about upgrading your tank in the coming years to be fair to the fish long term.

I was planning on getting a 90 next summer. All my current equipment is actually compatible with that size tank.

But if you get a really small one you will have the new tank long before the fish outgrows the tank you have now. Of course if you end up not upgrading, you might have to get rid of the fish.

There are a ton of beautiful fish for your 55. You'll find one that will be perfect until the day you make the change to a bigger tank.
