Try this calculation: Take the open water length of the tank plus the open water width (Think of the letter "L" place in the open section of the tank). Then, look up the maximum size of the tang on fishbase.org and take 80% of that value. Divide the second number by the first and put a 1: in front of it to get a ratio. Absolute minimum would be 1:6 , a good working figure would be 1:8 and there are a few people who advocate for 1:12.
Note: different fish would have different ratios, and this has NOTHING to do with tank carrying capacity or the territoriality of the fish, just swimming space.
